Mapbox Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mapbox Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mapbox Developer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript, web mapping concepts, and experience with the Mapbox GL JS library, often supported by a background in computer science or GIS. Familiarity with APIs, spatial data formats (GeoJSON), and related frameworks such as React or Leaflet, as well as Mapbox-specific tools and SDKs, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and deliver user-friendly map experiences. These skills ensure accurate, performant, and visually engaging geospatial applications that meet user and business requirements.

What are some common challenges Mapbox Developers face when integrating custom map features into web or mobile applications?

Mapbox Developers often encounter challenges such as optimizing map performance for large datasets, ensuring cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility, and managing API rate limits. Another frequent hurdle is customizing the map's appearance and interactivity to fit unique project requirements while maintaining usability and responsiveness. Collaboration with designers and backend developers is also essential, as seamless data integration and user experience depend on effective teamwork.

What is a Mapbox Developer?

A Mapbox Developer is a software developer who specializes in using Mapbox, a popular mapping and location platform, to build custom maps and geospatial applications. They work with Mapbox APIs and SDKs to integrate interactive maps, visualizations, and location-based features into websites and mobile apps. Mapbox Developers often have experience with JavaScript, web development frameworks, and geospatial data. Their work can include tasks like customizing map styles, handling geolocation data, and implementing real-time mapping features.

While both roles involve working with spatial data, a Mapbox Developer specializes in creating interactive maps using Mapbox tools and APIs, primarily for web and mobile applications. A GIS Developer has a broader focus on geographic information systems, spatial data management, and analysis, often working with various GIS software. The choice depends on whether the project emphasizes Mapbox technologies or comprehensive GIS solutions.

Job description

Company Description

Mapbox is a mapping platform for developers. Our building blocks make it easy to integrate location into any mobile or online application. We want to change the way people move around cities and understand our planet.

We're looking for someone who's as good with customers as they are with code to help us grow our platform and our business across new industries. This is a multi-disciplinary role. You'll work closely with the Mapbox engineering, development, business, and operations teams but often semi-autonomously to qualify opportunities and support our enterprise users.

Mapbox is building the geospatial platform of the future, but we recognize that many organizations still rely on tools of the past. You'll help them understand why and how to build with Mapbox - whether they're using satellites to spot forest fires, analyzing millions of electoral votes, or monitoring driving habits to adjust auto insurance rates - and support them every step of the way. You'll use what you learn from our customers to help us improve our technology.

Job Description

You'll lead the technical sales process: digging into customer use cases, offering guidance on Mapbox implementation and integration, building demonstrations, providing training, and handling platform and security discussions. You'll help translate user questions and requests into actionable feedback for Mapbox developers and engineers.

Qualifications
  • Strong communications. You're pithy and organized when you write and speak.
  • Action-oriented. You break complex tasks into smaller steps, seek help when you need it, and JFDI as much as possible.
  • Enterprise experience. You've worked large enterprise deals, know how to qualify a lead, and aren't afraid to line edit a 39-page contract.
  • Public/private partnership. Your experience includes private sector and government work, ideally with federal agencies. You keep a pocket dictionary of acronyms and, for extra credit, have an active security clearance.
  • Code like Janus. You've got strong front-end and server-side magic. You've got an eye on the past and the future. You know legacy geospatial tools inside and out but want to dive into Mapbox - or already have.
  • Engineering feet on the ground, head in cloud. You've got the bash skills to deploy Mapbox anywhere - from a Linux VM on a Windows Server to a private cloud - but prefer to have Amazon Web Services do your dirty work for you.
Additional Information

Are you the sales engineer we're looking for? Drop us a line at jobs at mapbox dot com.

    • Send your LinkedIn and GitHub profiles and some compelling examples of your work.
    • Tell us why you want to join the team. Communication is critical, and the note should give us a sense of how you write.
    • Include examples of maps and apps you've built using Mapbox and links to any other work you think is relevant on GitHub.
    • Make sure you are read up on our blog and developer pages. You should know, use, and love what we're building.
