Job description

Job Title: Civil CAD Technician

Job Description

This role focuses on survey CAD drafting in support of a multidisciplinary surveying team that delivers boundary, topographic, ALTA, construction staking, layout, and GIS/mapping services. The Civil CAD Technician interprets raw survey data and transforms it into precise drawings and documentation using AutoCAD Civil 3D, contributing directly to land development and civil site projects across commercial, community, multi-tenant, and healthcare developments.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret raw survey data collected by field surveyors, including measurements, angles, elevation points, and other relevant information, and translate it into accurate digital models.
  • Create detailed drawings, maps, plans, and layouts using AutoCAD Civil 3D, including topographic maps, boundary surveys, subdivision layouts, ALTA surveys, and as-built surveys.
  • Accurately depict property boundaries, easements, rights-of-way, and other legal aspects in coordination with a Licensed Surveyor to ensure compliance and precision.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on data files to identify and correct errors in code descriptions or other issues that may affect the setup and accuracy of Civil 3D drawings.
  • Import survey data into clean point drawings and generate drawings with processed linework based on the desired output and standards for each project.
  • Produce topographic maps that clearly represent elevation, terrain, and other site features for use in design and planning.
  • Prepare boundary survey drawings that define property lines and legal boundaries for land transactions, development, and regulatory approvals.
  • Develop ALTA survey drawings that document property boundaries, improvements, and other required details for commercial and institutional projects.
  • Draft subdivision layouts that plan the division of land into plots for development, ensuring logical, buildable, and code-compliant configurations.
  • Create as-built survey drawings that document the actual constructed conditions of a project, supporting closeout, verification, and future modifications.
  • Collaborate closely with surveyors, engineers, and other team members to clarify data, resolve discrepancies, and ensure alignment with project requirements.
  • Maintain organized drawing files, adhere to drafting standards, and support continuous improvement of CAD processes and templates.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience in civil site or survey drafting on commercial developments, community projects, multi-tenant sites, or healthcare facilities.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D for creating civil and survey drawings, including points, surfaces, alignments, and linework.
  • Experience in survey drafting, particularly in preparing drawings for boundary, topographic, ALTA, subdivision, and as-built surveys.
  • Background in civil design, site development, or land development that includes exposure to survey drafting at the front end of the site development process.
  • Ability to interpret and work with topographic surveys, land surveying data, and related field measurements.
  • Strong understanding of civil and survey drawing practices, including layering, annotation, and drafting standards.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy when reviewing survey data and code descriptions to ensure error-free CAD setups.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with surveyors, engineers, and other technical staff.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Carlson Survey software, with a willingness to transition skills into AutoCAD Civil 3D workflows.
  • Experience working with point cloud data for use in survey or civil design applications.
  • Ability to manipulate LiDAR data and integrate it into CAD environments for mapping and modeling purposes.
  • Familiarity with GIS or mapping concepts and their relationship to survey and civil CAD workflows.
  • Interest in growing within a fast-scaling firm and taking on increased responsibility over time.

Work Environment

The role is based in a modern, renovated office in Louisville, KY, designed by an in-house architecture team to support a collaborative and professional atmosphere. Typical work hours run from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., providing a consistent daytime schedule that supports strong work-life balance. The environment emphasizes employee growth and professional development, offering opportunities to learn, advance, and contribute meaningfully within a smaller but fast-growing organization. The culture prioritizes flexibility, including flexible PTO, and a supportive day-to-day experience where team members feel valued and respected.
