Job Description
As an Advanced Manufacturing Technician in our Gear Center, you will support prototype and low-volume manufacturing operations with a strong emphasis on CNC lathe and mill setup, operation, troubleshooting, and programming. You will collaborate closely with Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, equipment suppliers, and plant personnel to develop, optimize, and sustain machining processes, tooling, fixtures, and equipment. You will provide hands-on technical guidance to enable safe, efficient, and repeatable machining processes that meet product and manufacturing requirements.

  • Maintain safe operations by following all safety procedures and regulations.
  • Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and optimize CNC lathes, mills, and related machining equipment.
  • Develop, edit, prove out, and optimize CNC programs to support prototype and production machining requirements.
  • Collaborate with machining equipment suppliers on programming, setup, and preparation of equipment and tooling.
  • Read, understand, and interpret part drawings, gear and spline charts, specifications, orthographic drawings, machining parameters, and GD&T requirements.
  • Select, develop, and support tooling, fixtures, workholding, offsets, and cutting parameters for machining applications.
  • Define machining equipment and process requirements to support manufacturing needs.
  • Implement engineering changes driven by product requirements.
  • Support development and testing of advanced manufacturing process technologies.
  • Partner with engineering functions, suppliers, and plant personnel to implement cost reductions, process improvements, and product enhancements.
  • Establish and improve operational methods and work standards using sound manufacturing techniques.
  • Analyze existing machining operations and recommend improvements in cycle time, tool life, quality, repeatability, and equipment utilization.
  • Optimize the use of floor space, materials, tooling, and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, fixture, and process issues and lead problem-solving activities within the team.
  • Support preventive maintenance activities by following manufacturer instructions, identifying malfunctions, and escalating issues when needed.
  • Maintain continuity across shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and ongoing needs.
  • Document production-related activities and maintain accurate technical and operational records.
  • Work with Product Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers to support part validation and manufacturing-related problem solving.
  • Attend weekly team meetings and participate in layered audits as required.
  • Provide technical expertise on custom projects supporting GM Racing, GM Defense, EV, and battery programs.
  • Support quality requirements through adherence to standard processes and non-conforming material procedures.
  • Be available to work weekends, overtime, and off shifts as needed.

Required Skills and Experience
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of Gear Center operations.
  • Strong hands-on experience with CNC lathes and mills, including setup, operation, adjustment, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong CNC programming capability, including program creation, editing, prove-out, and optimization for machining performance and repeatability.
