Manufacturing Lab Assistant information

What does a manufacturing lab assistant do?

A Manufacturing Lab Assistant supports the production process by performing laboratory tests, preparing samples, and maintaining equipment in a manufacturing environment. Their duties often include quality control testing, recording data, and ensuring that manufacturing processes meet safety and quality standards. They work closely with engineers and technicians to troubleshoot issues and help improve manufacturing efficiency. This role is essential to ensuring that products meet regulatory and company requirements before reaching the market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manufacturing lab assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Lab Assistant, you generally need a background in laboratory procedures, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or associate degree in a science-related field. Familiarity with lab equipment, safety protocols, and data entry systems such as LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) is common. Strong organizational skills, teamwork, and effective communication help you stand out in this role. These abilities ensure accurate data collection, safe lab operations, and efficient workflow in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by manufacturing lab assistants, and how can they be overcome?

Manufacturing Lab Assistants often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict safety protocols, handling multiple tasks simultaneously, and ensuring accurate documentation of test results. Adaptability and attention to detail are crucial, as labs can be fast-paced with frequent changes in priorities. Building strong communication skills and staying organized can help you collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and quality control teams, making it easier to resolve issues that arise on the production floor.

What is the difference between Manufacturing Lab Assistant vs Quality Control Technician?

AspectManufacturing Lab AssistantQuality Control Technician
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require technical certificationsHigh school diploma; certifications in quality assurance or related fields preferred
Work EnvironmentLaboratory settings within manufacturing plants, assisting with sample preparation and testingLaboratories and production lines, focusing on inspecting and testing products for quality
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing companies across various industries, including pharmaceuticals, electronics, and food productionManufacturing and production industries, especially in quality assurance departments

Both roles support manufacturing processes but differ mainly in focus. Manufacturing Lab Assistants assist with sample preparation and basic testing, while Quality Control Technicians conduct detailed inspections and ensure product standards. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Working alongside leading experts in the field, you will take on new challenges, broaden your expertise, develop new capabilities, and take ownership of projects that matter - while contributing to the broader success of the organization.
Work on problems that matter. Help solve some of the most pressing challenges in the Advanced Semiconductor, AI Infrastructure, and Advanced Materials industries. Boston Materials offers a rare combination of purpose, autonomy, and impact. We invite you to join us.
The Role
We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Lab Technician to play a critical role in our Research and Development (R&D) and Quality Control (QC) operations. You will be responsible for preparing, processing, and testing our proprietary carbon fiber-based materials, ensuring adherence to strict quality standards, and supporting the rapid development of new product formulations.
Your Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain, and execute varied testing on raw materials, in-process samples using specialized lab equipment, including but not limited to Thermal Analysis Equipment, Mechanical Testers (e.g., Universal Testing Machine for tensile, compression, and shear), Electrical Testing Equipment, Calendering Tools, and Die cutting.
  • Following detailed SOPs, prepare samples, including composite layup, cutting, polishing, and mounting.
  • Assist scientists and engineers with experimental setups, material mixing, formulation preparation, and small-scale batch processing related to our Z-axis Fiberโ„ข composites; troubleshoot process deviations and material issues under the direction of engineers.
  • Monitor and record critical processing parameters (e.g., temperature, pressure, time) during pilot and production runs and promptly report out-of-spec or non-conforming results to the appropriate personnel.
  • Accurately record, manage, and analyze experimental and quality control data using laboratory notebooks, Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), and spreadsheets.
  • Ensure all testing and calibration logs are maintained in compliance with internal Quality Management System (QMS) standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment in accordance with Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) policies.

Your Required Skills and Expertise
  • Associate Degree or technical certification in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience working in an R&D, QC, or manufacturing laboratory setting, preferably with advanced materials, polymers, or composites.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced R&D/manufacturing team.
  • Proven experience with standard laboratory practices, safety protocols, and chemical handling and familiarity with common material characterization techniques (e.g., mechanical testing, microscopy).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) for data entry and report generation.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and time management, and a commitment to accurate and high-quality work.

Your Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Direct experience with carbon fiber composites, prepregs, or thermal interface materials.
