Job description

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL)is looking for someone to join our R&D Communications team as a Mechanical Engineering intern to join us in the design, testing, and production of industrial electronics. In this role, you'll be putting your ME courses into practice through tasks like design of sheet metal, machined and injection molded parts, prototyping your ideas in our lab, and testing them to rigorous quality standards.

We're seeking motivated students from local universities who are interested in building real-world experience throughout the year. Candidates who can work part-time during the academic year and full-time during the summer are encouraged to apply.

A typical day as a Mechanical Engineer Intern might include:

  • Create and update SolidWorks part models and engineering drawings.

  • Perform mechanical analysis: Thermal, Structural, Tolerance.

  • Complete testing of designs: Thermal, Vibration, Force/Strain.

  • Collaborate with Electrical, Compliance, and Manufacturing engineers to develop and validate designs.

  • Support products across multiple stages of development from early NPI to sustaining engineering.

  • Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.

  • Other duties as assigned.

This job might be for you if:

  • Currently in pursuit of a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, with one to two years of engineering coursework completed.

  • One year of SolidWorks experience (or equivalent CAD software).

  • Ability to conduct defined testing procedures.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Strong writing, documentation, and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities.

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications or equivalent software.

  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL.

  • Negative drug test result(s).


It is a plus if you have:

  • Lab experience: building prototypes, design of experiments, hands on troubleshooting.

  • Python or MATLAB scripting for data analysis.

  • Exposure to simulation analysis.

Pay Range Data - $24.25 - $33.00 hourly
