What is a manual software tester?

Manual software testers are professionals who assess software applications for defects or bugs by executing test cases manually, without using automated tools. They validate that the software behaves as expected and meets specified requirements by simulating real user scenarios. Manual testers document issues, provide feedback to developers, and help ensure the final product is reliable and user-friendly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manual software tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manual Software Tester, you need a solid understanding of software development processes, test case creation, and attention to detail, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with bug tracking systems (like Jira), test management tools, and basic SQL or scripting is often required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills help testers efficiently identify and report defects while collaborating with development teams. These skills are crucial to ensure software quality, minimize defects, and deliver reliable products to end users.

What are the most common challenges faced by manual software testers, and how can they be addressed?

Manual Software Testers often encounter challenges such as identifying subtle bugs, managing repetitive testing tasks, and ensuring thorough coverage under tight deadlines. To address these, it's important to develop strong attention to detail, maintain organized documentation, and communicate effectively with developers and team members. Leveraging test case management tools and participating actively in sprint meetings can help testers stay aligned with project requirements and improve overall testing efficiency.

Job description

ENFOS is redefining how global enterprises manage long-term environmental risk. As the category leader in Environmental Obligation Management, our platform centralizes and automates the full lifecycle of Environmental Remediation Obligations (EROs) and Asset Retirement Obligations (AROs)—replacing fragmented spreadsheets and outdated tools with a purpose-built, multi-tenant SaaS platform.

For 25 years, ENFOS has helped the world’s leading industrial companies stay audit-ready, SOX-compliant, and financially in control of their environmental obligations. Privately held and profitable, ENFOS operates with no direct competitors and supports a blue-chip customer base spanning energy and natural resources, chemicals, manufacturing, and logistics end markets.

With regulatory pressure rising and ESG scrutiny intensifying, ENFOS is uniquely positioned to empower Finance, Legal, and Remediation teams to improve decision-making, mitigate risk, and drive long-term balance sheet reliability.
Why ENFOS?
Every major industrial company carries Environmental Obligations: the legal and financial commitments to remediate, restore, and account for the footprint of their operations. These obligations represent billions of dollars of liabilities, span decades, and have historically been managed across spreadsheets, inboxes, and institutional knowledge.

ENFOS is the enterprise system of record that replaces all of that. The world's leading energy, chemical, mining, manufacturing, and industrial companies run their Environmental Obligation programs on our platform.

Our advantage isn't a generic AI model. It's decades of domain expertise, structured enterprise data, and mission-critical workflows that competitors cannot easily replicate. We are profitable, growing quickly, and transforming our platform from a record system into an AI-enabled system of intelligence. If you're excited about building durable enterprise software, solving complex technical problems, and shaping the future of EOM, we'd love to meet you.

About the Role:
As a Senior QA Automation Engineer / SDET at ENFOS, reporting to the QA Lead, who reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer, you will join our Quality Engineering team and play a key role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and scalability of a platform trusted by many of the world's largest industrial companies. You will own the testing strategy and execution for new features from requirements through production release, combining deep exploratory and manual testing with scalable end-to-end automation built on Playwright.

This role carries significant ownership across test strategy, automation coverage, and quality standards. You will embrace AI-assisted testing to increase coverage and productivity, mentor junior engineers, and raise quality engineering practices across the team.

How We Work:
We believe exceptional software is built by engineers who own outcomes, not just tickets.

  • Agile development: We operate in two-week sprints with clear ownership, rapid iteration, and continuous customer feedback.
  • Engineering Excellence: Clean architecture, automated testing, code reviews, and maintainable software are foundational to how we build.
  • Modern Platform: Our platform is supported by a modern engineering toolchain including Playwright, GitLab, GitLab CI/CD, and Docker.
  • Continuous Growth: We invest in mentorship, quality engineering leadership, and system-level thinking, creating opportunities to influence the platform and grow your career.

Expectations:
Success in this role means independently driving quality throughout the development lifecycle, catching issues before customers do, and continuously raising the reliability and coverage of our test suites. You are expected to own testing initiatives end-to-end, review requirements for gaps and risk before development is complete, provide reliable estimates, communicate clearly across teams, and deliver high-quality releases on schedule.

What You'll Do:

  • Own the testing effort for new features from requirements through production release.
  • Design, execute, and maintain comprehensive manual, exploratory, regression, and end-to-end automated test scenarios.
  • Develop and maintain scalable automated test suites using Playwright, and perform API testing to validate REST backend integrations.
  • Build and maintain automated tests within GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
  • Review business requirements to identify missing acceptance criteria, edge cases, and risks before development is complete.
  • Perform root cause analysis for production issues, partner with developers to resolve defects quickly, and create high-quality bug reports with clear reproduction steps and business impact.
  • Continuously improve automation coverage, test reliability, and overall QA processes.

AI-Assisted Testing:
We are transforming our platform into an AI-enabled system of intelligence, and we expect our engineers to work the same way, actively leveraging AI to:

  • Generate and improve test cases, and discover additional edge cases during exploratory testing.
  • Accelerate Playwright automation development.
  • Review requirements to identify missing scenarios, and analyze defects, logs, and regression impact.
  • Validate AI-generated outputs before incorporating them into the automation framework.

Additional Responsibilites:

  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Developers, Business Analysts, and fellow QA team members throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Mentor junior QA engineers and champion scalable, repeatable QA processes and reusable test architecture that improve quality as the platform grows.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in Software QA or SDET roles
  • Excellent manual and exploratory testing skills, with expert-level experience in Playwright
  • Strong programming experience with TypeScript or JavaScript
  • Experience testing REST APIs and validating backend integrations
  • Experience with GitLab and GitLab CI/CD, and designing scalable automation frameworks and test architecture
  • Experience working with enterprise business applications
  • Strong understanding of Agile and CI/CD practices, with excellent debugging, analytical, and root cause analysis skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, with strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience testing financial or accounting systems
  • Demonstrated experience using AI to improve test coverage, productivity, and software quality
  • Experience in regulated or audit-driven, multi-module enterprise software environments

Benefits

  • Salary range in the US: $120,000 - $150,000 with opportunity for discretionary bonus paid annually
  • Stock options granted at time of hire and periodically based on performance
  • Comprehensive Benefits Package
