Job description

Karman Space & Defense is a leader in the rapid design, development, and production of critical, next-generation system solutions that align with the U.S. Department of War and its allies’ core mission priorities, and meet the accelerating demand for access to space. Building on nearly 50 years of success, we deliver Payload & Protection Systems, Aero/Hydrodynamic Interstage Systems, and Propulsion & Launch Systems to more than 80 prime contractors supporting over 130 space and defense programs.

This role is part of our Space and Launch business, which has contributed to the nation’s space programs for decades by delivering complete solutions from concept to flight. We enable successful space operations with mission-critical technology supporting every step from first launch to final landing, including launch vehicle subsystems, propulsion systems, aerodynamic and interstage systems, and payload protection and deployment. Our high-performance solutions are engineered to operate in the most extreme environments and meet precise mission requirements.

As a VTL Programmer, you will develop and optimize machining programs that support the production of high‑precision aerospace hardware. You will collaborate closely with machinists, engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure part accuracy, efficient machining strategies, and effective workflow. Your work directly supports reliable operations, continuous improvement, and the delivery of components essential to spaceflight.

Responsibilities

• Develops and optimizes VTL programs for complex aerospace components across 3‑axis and 5‑axis machining platforms.
• Creates and modifies machining strategies to improve efficiency, tool life, and part quality.
• Designs holding fixtures and selects cutting tools for supported machining operations.
• Maintains CNC programs to reflect current print and model revisions.
• Integrates programming activities with Production, Quality, and Program Management teams to support workflow.
• Applies AS9100 procedures and supports continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ensures department processes, safety rules, and company practices are followed.
• Troubleshoots machining or programming issues and communicates actionable solutions to supervisors.
• Manages work to meet production schedules and deadlines.
• Supports an organized, safe, and clean programming work environment.

Required Qualifications

• Experience operating 3‑axis and 5‑axis VTL machines.
• Experience with Catia, Mastercam, or equivalent computer‑aided manufacturing (CAM) software, and familiarity with G‑code and M‑code.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, process instructions, and engineering drawings.
• Experience operating standard machine shop equipment such as drills, mills, lathes, grinders, and saws.
• Knowledge of standard and metric terminology.
• Ability to calculate machining speeds and feeds.
• Familiarity with machine controls, instrumentation, tooling, and machine setup.
• Working knowledge of basic safety policies and procedures.
• Ability to problem solve, manage time effectively, stay organized, and maintain attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate effectively across all levels and collaborate with internal customers.
• Understanding of basic Quality Management System (QMS) reporting and record‑keeping requirements and ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to adapt to applicable changes and customer requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Work experience as a machinist or equivalent hands‑on machining background.
• Lean manufacturing knowledge.
• Professional attitude and passion for continuous improvement.

Physical Requirements

• Constant standing, walking, and sitting for at least 8 hours.
• Occasional pushing, pulling, lifting, or carrying up to 50 lbs, with a minimum requirement of 35 lbs.
• Sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and typical office equipment.
• Ability to see clearly at approximately 20 inches or less, with corrective lenses as needed.
• Prolonged periods of repetitive movement.
• Constant holding, grasping, turning, or other hand‑intensive tasks.
• Occasional reaching overhead, at shoulder level, and below shoulder level.
• The essential functions of this position must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

This position requires U.S. person status under U.S. export control laws, including U.S. citizens and nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees.

Benefits
