Job Description: Steel Handler

Location: Grandville, MI

Reports To: Production Manager

Interfaces With: Production, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, Tool Room, Scheduling, Material Handling, Purchasing

Role Purpose

  • Safely receive, inspect, move, store, and stage steel coils to support production requirements and production machines
  • Maintain accurate steel identification, weights, inventory transactions, and material locations in Plex
  • Support press operations, coil changes, equipment readiness, and the safe and efficient flow of material throughout the facility
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized steel bay while supporting production and other departments as needed

Core Accountabilities

Safety and Equipment Operation

  • Complete required daily safety inspections and safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, crane scales, and other material-handling equipment
  • Identify and promptly report equipment concerns, unsafe conditions, damaged material, and repair needs
  • Maintain current forklift and overhead crane certifications

Steel Receiving and Inventory Control

  • Unload incoming steel coils and verify material thickness, width, condition, and receiving documentation
  • Complete required Plex transactions to receive, transfer, stage, reweigh, retag, or reject coils as necessary
  • Maintain accurate coil identification, weights, tags, system locations, and receiving paperwork

Production Support

  • Review shift communication and the production schedule to understand daily priorities and material requirements
  • Pre-stage and deliver steel coils to production to support scheduled jobs and minimize downtime
  • Assist Press Operators with coil changes, machine setups, and other material-related activities

Department and Facility Support

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized steel bay by removing banding, debris, and other materials
  • Complete daily 5S requirements and support housekeeping activities throughout the facility
  • Support Engineering with coil strips for tooling tryouts and development activities
  • Support Quality with sorting or reworking nonconforming product according to established instructions and required production rates
  • Assist Operations with trash, cardboard, scrap hoppers, and other assigned activities as time allows

Education and Experience

  • Must be able to read and write
  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Physical Requirements

  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 35 pounds independently
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, and climbing
  • Ability to safely operate material-handling equipment throughout the workday

Travel Requirements

  • Minimal travel required for this position

Language Requirements

  • Must be able to read and write in English

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Safety glasses and hearing protection are required in all manufacturing areas
  • Additional PPE must be worn as required by the task or work area

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing environment with continuous noise and moving equipment
  • Exposure to dust, grease, moisture, fumes, strong odors, chemicals, heated tanks, and varying temperatures
  • Potential exposure to cuts, burns, and other manufacturing hazards requiring strict adherence to safety procedures
  • Intermittent exposure to outdoor weather conditions

Key Performance Indicators

  • Safe operation of forklifts, overhead cranes, crane scales, and other material-handling equipment
  • Completion of the Steel Handler training requirements identified in Form O3055 and demonstration of the required skills to the Team Leader
  • Proficiency in required Plex transactions, including receiving product, moving containers, creating or reprinting tags, adjusting weights, and rejecting coils
  • Accuracy of steel receiving, material identification, coil weights, tags, inventory locations, and receiving documentation
  • Timely staging and delivery of steel to support production schedules and minimize material-related downtime
  • Proper use of measuring devices and material-handling procedures
  • Steel bay cleanliness, organization, and daily 5S performance

Maintenance of current forklift and overhead crane certifications
