Manager Solidworks information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager Solidworks, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager Solidworks, you need strong expertise in mechanical design, engineering principles, and project management, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency in Solidworks CAD software, experience with PDM systems, and certifications like Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) are highly valued. Leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage teams and coordinate complex projects. These competencies ensure efficient workflow, high-quality design output, and successful project delivery in competitive engineering environments.

How does a Manager Solidworks typically collaborate with engineering and design teams to drive project success?

A Manager Solidworks works closely with engineering and design teams by overseeing the development and implementation of CAD models and ensuring that design standards are consistently met. They facilitate communication between team members, assign tasks based on expertise, and help resolve technical challenges that arise during project execution. Additionally, they often coordinate with project managers and manufacturing teams to make sure that designs are manufacturable and align with project timelines. This collaborative approach ensures that projects progress smoothly from concept to production, while also fostering skill development within the team.

What are Manager Solidworks?

A Manager Solidworks is a professional responsible for overseeing teams that use SolidWorks, a popular 3D CAD (computer-aided design) software, to design and develop products. They manage engineering or design teams, ensure project milestones are met, and coordinate the use of SolidWorks tools to optimize workflows. In addition to technical expertise with SolidWorks, they also handle project management, team leadership, and collaboration with other departments to deliver high-quality designs efficiently.

What is the difference between Manager Solidworks vs Design Engineer Solidworks?

AspectManager SolidworksDesign Engineer Solidworks
Primary RoleOversees design teams, manages projects, and ensures design standardsDevelops and creates detailed 3D models and drawings using Solidworks
Required SkillsLeadership, project management, Solidworks proficiency, communicationSolidworks expertise, engineering knowledge, CAD skills
Work EnvironmentOffice-based, team management, collaboration with multiple departmentsDesign studios, engineering departments, CAD labs
CertificationsSolidworks Certification, possibly PMP or management coursesSolidworks Certification, engineering degrees

While both roles require Solidworks proficiency, the Manager Solidworks focuses on team leadership and project oversight, whereas the Design Engineer Solidworks concentrates on creating detailed CAD models and drawings. The roles complement each other within engineering and design teams, with the manager guiding project execution and the engineer executing technical design work.

Job description

At Roadcase.com, we design and manufacture high-performance custom road cases for the entertainment and live events industry. These cases protect and transport high-value AV equipment under demanding conditions.

We are looking for a high-level SolidWorks user with a strong background in manufacturing and product design—someone who doesn’t just model parts, but understands how things are built, assembled, and improved.

This role requires a mechanically inclined, detail-oriented problem solver who can look at an assembly and immediately understand:

  • How it functions
  • Where it might fail
  • How to improve it
  • What tolerances and hardware are appropriate
  • How to execute changes quickly and efficiently in SolidWorks

Every project is custom, so success in this role depends on critical thinking, adaptability, and deep practical experience—not just software proficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, analyze, and accurately model customer equipment for case integration
  • Design fully customized, manufacturable road case solutions based on client requirements
  • Create robust 3D models and assemblies in SolidWorks with a focus on real-world manufacturability
  • Produce detailed 2D technical drawings with appropriate tolerances, fits, and callouts
  • Select and apply correct hardware and fastening methods based on load, material, and use case
  • Identify design improvements for durability, usability, and production efficiency
  • Reverse engineer parts and assemblies when required
  • Generate manufacturing-ready files (DWG, DXF, STEP, etc.)
  • Maintain clean, organized file structures and revision control across all design assets
  • Collaborate closely with production to optimize builds, reduce errors, and improve throughput
  • Work with vendors/suppliers to source components and validate design feasibility
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong time and priority management

What We're Looking For

This is not an entry-level or purely CAD-focused role. We want someone who:

  • Has real-world manufacturing experience and understands how designs translate to the shop floor
  • Can look at an assembly and immediately understand how it works—and how to improve it
  • Knows when to prioritize speed vs. precision in SolidWorks
  • Is confident choosing:
  • Proper tolerances and fits
  • Correct hardware for each application
  • Efficient modeling strategies and tools
  • Is fast, accurate, and intentional in CAD work
  • Thinks like a builder, not just a designer

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of advanced SolidWorks experience (assemblies, configurations, drawings, workflows)
  • 3+ years of hands-on manufacturing or fabrication experience
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Mechanical assemblies and real-world fitment
  • Tolerancing and design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • Fasteners, hardware selection, and application
  • Proven ability to create production-ready drawings and documentation
  • Experience managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in product design or mechanical engineering
  • Experience with custom fabrication environments (wood, CNC routing, metal, finishing)
  • Familiarity with process optimization and continuous improvement
  • Vendor/supplier coordination experience
  • Project management experience
