JOB TITLE Instructional Assistant (Special Education: 1 on 1 SHE) FLSA CLASSIFICATION Non-exempt, hourly employee. WORK DAYS 181 days (those days when students are scheduled to attend school)ย 

STANDARD HOURSย 

PER DAY

7 hours per day (not including a 30-minute unpaid duty-free meal break) WORK YEARย  The Instructional Assistant is scheduled to work all days when students are scheduled to attend school, depending on which calendar the school follows. SALARY SCHEDULE & BENEFITS The Instructional Assistant is paid on the "Instructional Assistants" salary schedule for the designated program, level 4, and is eligible for benefits on the "Support Staff" benefits schedule.ย  Starting pay $21.63per hour. REPORTS TOย  The Instructional Assistant is supervised by one or more teachers. Instructional Assistants and teachers report to the building Principal or designee. SUPERVISES The Instructional Assistant does not supervise any other employee(s).

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Under direct supervision, the 1 on 1 Instructional Assistant in Special Education, will play a crucial role in providing support to one student with diverse learning needs. Your primary responsibility will be to assist the Special Education student in having positive and inclusive learning experiences, fostering the academic and social development of the student. This role will primarily support classroom settings located at Sunny Heights Elementary School, assisting their assigned student and the teachers in the classrooms on the student's schedule. Depending on the student's needs, this role requires physical assistance and flexibility to adapt to changing situations. Work hours align with the school schedule, with occasional school meetings and events. The Instructional Assistant performs related work as directed.ย 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:ย 

The Instructional Assistant will provide individualized support to an elementary student with diverse needs, promoting their comfort, safety, and engagement throughout the school day. Responsibilities include assisting with mobility and transitions, including wheelchair transport and occasional lifting, as well ensuring the student's dignity and balance. The assistant will scribe written tasks as needed, support the student duringย  lunch, and offer general observation to foster independence while attending to daily needs. This role requires compassion, discretion, and adaptability as the student's requirements continue to be assessed.This includes the ability to participate in and supervise a range of activities such as:

  • Moving around the classroom and school campus efficiently
  • Engaging in physical activities during lessons, recess, and physical education
  • Responding quickly to student needs and emergencies
  • Demonstrating and participating in activities that require physical movement and coordination

1. Student Support:ย 

  1. Provide one-on-one assistance to students with special needs, helping them with academic, organization, and communication skills.
  2. Assists students in achieving their goals that require physical and emotional support with successfully navigating classroom, cafeteria and school-related experiences as outlined by their IEP and teacher direction.
  3. Participate in community based instruction (field-trips), supporting school and community jobs and skill development.ย 

2. Behavioral Support and Safety & Health:

  1. Implement behavior management strategies, following Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), to support students' emotional and behavioral development.
  2. Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times, following established protocols for medical and emergency situations.
  3. Maintain student's dignity and privacy while providing safe and consistent support with personal needs.
  4. Receives NCI training in order to promote de-escalation and safety.
  5. Assists students with daily living skills, such as dressing, eating, lavatory needs, grooming, medical needs, and personal hygiene as appropriate to individual development. Complies with personal hygiene rules and standard sanitation procedures.

3. Assistive Technology: Familiarize students with assistive technology tools and aid them in using these devices to enhance their learning and/or communication needs.

4. Classroom Preparation: Collaborate with the teacher to prepare instructional materials, adapt curriculum, and create a supportive classroom environment.ย 

5. Data Tracking:ย 

  1. Collect and record data on student progress and behavior, ensuring accurate documentation for IEP progress reports and meetings.
  2. Reinforce behaviors that demonstrate student's successful achievement and growth of identified goals.ย 

6. Inclusion: Facilitate the inclusion of students with disabilities into general education classroom activities, ensuring they have equal access to the curriculum.ย 

7. Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with the teachers and other specialists involved in the students' education.

8. Professional Development: Stay informed about best practices in special education and participate in training opportunities to improve your skills and knowledge.ย 

9. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

ENTRY-LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:

1.ย ย  ย EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School diploma or GED is required; an Associate's degree or higher, or at least sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited institution of higher education is preferred. (Official transcripts are required to validate education.)

2.ย ย  ย EXPERIENCE: Previous vocational training or work experience with school-age children with special needs is preferred.ย 

3.ย ย  ย CERTIFICATIONS &/OR LICENSES: Able to meet the requirements of a paraprofessional as outlined in ESSA.ย  Pass the required Expanded Criminal History Check and Expanded Child Protection Index Check.ย  Must have at least an associate's degree or two years of college or passed the ParaPro Assessment. ย  Highlander Park offers the ParaPro Assessment at no cost for all Warren Township prospective employees.ย  Testing is offered Monday through Thursday at 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.ย  To register for your free assessment, email adulteducation@warren.k12.in.us or call 317-532-3000.
