The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) is a 501(c)(3) membership organization located in Washington, DC that serves as the voice of accredited academic public health. Position Purpose
The Librarian Fellow will participate in a one-year learning partnership supported by the Grace and Harold Sewell Memorial Fund. The fellowship is designed to immerse an experienced librarian in ASPPH's work while applying library and information science expertise in nontraditional ways. Through collaboration with staff, organizational leaders, and an advisory group, the Fellow will support projects that strengthen ASPPH's use of information, research, and data-management practices while gaining a deeper understanding of academic public health, association operations, and organizational decision-making.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Participate in team-based projects that apply library, information science, research, and data-management skills in nontraditional ways.
  • Collaborate with ASPPH staff and leaders to identify information needs and opportunities to improve the organization, access, and use of information.
  • Support selected projects and activities that advance ASPPH's mission and strengthen the organization's use of information science disciplines.
  • Learn about ASPPH's programs, operations, decision-making processes, members, partners, and the public health issues addressed by the organization.
  • Conduct research, synthesize information, and develop resources, recommendations, or other work products in support of assigned projects.
  • Engage regularly with the fellowship mentor and advisory group for activity planning, coaching, feedback, and progress monitoring.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and share observations, recommendations, and lessons learned from the fellowship experience.
  • Maintain effective communication and engagement while working remotely and during the required weekly in-office day.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the purpose of the fellowship as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Professional experience applying library or information science skills in an academic, research, health, nonprofit, association, or comparable professional environment.
  • Knowledge of research methods, information organization and retrieval, data or information management, and current library and information science practices.
  • Interest in public health, health research, academic public health, association work, or the application of information science outside a traditional library setting.
  • Strong research, analytical, organizational, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, and collaborate effectively across teams and professional disciplines.
  • Ability to communicate and remain engaged in a hybrid work environment using both in-person and virtual collaboration tools.
  • Ability to perform work with accuracy, exercise sound judgment, and solve problems creatively.
Education
  • Master's degree in library science, library and information science, information science, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
Additional Information
  • Work Locale: This is a local hybrid position. The Fellow must reside in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and be within a reasonable commute of ASPPH's downtown Washington, DC office. The Fellow will work in person one day per week, with the remaining work performed remotely. Additional in-office attendance may be required for meetings or fellowship activities.
  • Reports To: Director of IDEA
  • Manages/Supervises: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
  • Authority to Work in the US: The individual must be legally eligible to work in the United States. ASPPH participates in E-Verify to confirm employment eligibility.
  • Travel Requirements: The position may involve occasional travel to conferences, member institutions, or other meetings related to the fellowship and its professional responsibilities.
  • Compensation: The position provides $85,000 in grant-funded compensation for the one-year fellowship. The Sewell Memorial Learning Partnership grant refers to this amount as a stipend. Compensation will be paid semi-monthly through ASPPH's payroll process and will be subject to applicable payroll taxes and withholdings.
  • Position: Temporary, full-time, grant-funded employee position. The fellowship is scheduled for 35 hours per week for a one-year term.
  • Benefits: The Fellow is eligible to accrue and use Paid Time Off (PTO) in accordance with ASPPH policy. This temporary grant-funded position is not eligible for ASPPH-sponsored health, welfare, or retirement benefits unless otherwise required by law or the terms of an applicable benefit plan.
  • Professional Development and Equipment: ASPPH will provide the computer equipment and technology needed for the role. Up to $3,000 in grant-supported conference and professional development expenses may be available for opportunities identified in collaboration with the Fellow.
Working at ASPPH
As an organization dedicated to advancing academic public health, ASPPH promotes collaboration, professional growth, and a healthy work-life balance. The Fellow will work within ASPPH's 35-hour workweek and hybrid environment and will have access to mentorship, organizational leaders, cross-functional teams, and professional development opportunities throughout the one-year learning partnership. ASPPH's downtown Washington, DC office includes private offices, shared workstations, collaborative meeting spaces, a kitchen and break room, and building amenities.
