What does a project manager do?

A Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and meet the required quality standards. They coordinate the efforts of team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a bachelor’s degree and experience in project management. Familiarity with project management software (like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 are commonly expected. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and adaptability set exceptional project managers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering projects on time, within scope, and fostering effective teamwork.

What are some common challenges faced by project managers in balancing leadership and project delivery responsibilities?

Job description

We're looking for people who put their innovation to work to advance our success - and their own. Join an organization that ensures a more secure world through connecting and protecting our customers with inventive electrical solutions.

At nVent, you'll lead complex electrical infrastructure projects that support some of the world's largest data centers. In this role, you'll handle the delivery of prefabricated electrical buildings (E-Houses) and power distribution solutions that help customers power critical operations. You'll work closely with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, construction, and customer teams to guide projects from initial design through fabrication, delivery, installation, and final commissioning.

If you enjoy solving problems, collaborating across teams, and seeing your work come to life, this is an opportunity to make a real impact in a supportive and inclusive environment where your contributions are valued.

Lead Projects from Start to Finish

  • Own and drive projects through the full lifecycle-from project kickoff through engineering, manufacturing, shipment, installation, and customer handoff.

  • Identify potential risks early and work proactively with collaborators to keep projects on schedule and within budget.

  • Track key project achievements, delivery performance, and financial goals to ensure successful execution.

Collaborate with Engineering & Operations Teams

  • Partner closely with engineering teams to ensure project requirements are technically feasible and aligned with customer expectations.

  • Coordinate across electrical, mechanical, and structural fields to ensure smooth integration and execution.

  • Facilitate the flow of information between design, manufacturing, and field teams to keep projects moving efficiently.

Drive Supply Chain & Production Success

  • Work with purchasing and suppliers to ensure critical materials and equipment arrive when needed.

  • Monitor supplier performance and help resolve issues that could impact project timelines or quality.

  • Coordinate with manufacturing teams to remove roadblocks and support on-time project completion.

Champion Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner with production teams to confirm products are built to specifications and customer expectations.

  • Lead quality reviews and problem-solving efforts to identify and address issues before they impact delivery.

Manage Financial Performance

  • Evaluate project changes, assess impacts to cost and schedule, and help coordinate efforts to address revisions in the project.

  • Track project budgets, forecasts, and overall financial performance.

  • Support customers after delivery by coordinating warranty and service activities when needed.

Build Strong Customer Partnerships

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Provide clear project updates, manage expectations, and build strong long-term relationships.

  • Translate technical information into clear and actionable business communications.

YOU HAVE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business Management, or a related field preferred or PMP Certification, or equivalent experience

  • 2+ years of project management experience in manufacturing or construction

  • Experience using project scheduling tools such as Microsoft Project.

  • Working knowledge of engineering drawings, electrical schematics, or AutoCAD is a plus.

  • Ability to travel up to 10%.
