Manager Project Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a bachelor’s degree and experience in project management. Familiarity with project management software (like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 are commonly expected. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and adaptability set exceptional project managers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering projects on time, within scope, and fostering effective teamwork.

What does a Project Manager do?

A Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and meet the required quality standards. They coordinate the efforts of team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. Project Managers also identify and mitigate risks, resolve issues, and ensure that project objectives are achieved according to the defined scope.

What are some common challenges faced by Manager Project Managers in balancing leadership and project delivery responsibilities?

Manager Project Managers often juggle the dual responsibilities of overseeing a team of project managers while also ensuring successful delivery of complex projects. A common challenge is allocating sufficient time to support team development and mentorship without compromising project deadlines or quality. Additionally, they must ensure clear communication across multiple stakeholders and resolve resource conflicts proactively. Balancing strategic oversight with hands-on project problem-solving is key, and effective delegation and time management are essential to thrive in this role.

Job description

 Specific Role:

We're looking for a highly motivated, experienced Project Manager to drive the execution of cross-departmental initiatives defined by EMIT Technologies' executive leadership. In this role, you'll bring structure, visibility, and forward momentum to projects that span multiple departments. Reporting to the Director of Project Management, you'll work both independently and collaboratively-often through influence rather than direct authority-to turn strategic priorities into successfully delivered outcomes.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Translate leadership priorities into clear project scopes, schedules, objectives, and execution plans
  • Build and maintain projects in Jira, including milestones, dependencies, resource needs, deliverables, and ownership
  • Secure alignment on project expectations, responsibilities, and deliverables before work begins
  • Drive projects to completion by monitoring progress, solving problems, and adjusting plans as needed
  • Identify risks early and take action before they affect project timelines or outcomes
  • Escalate at-risk commitments to the appropriate manager with enough lead time to secure support or reprioritize work
  • Coordinate resources, timelines, dependencies, and deliverables across multiple departments
  • Manage cross-functional handoffs and address areas where work may stall
  • Partner with other Project Managers to resolve shared-resource conflicts and competing priorities
  • Build cooperation and accountability through effective communication, collaboration, and influence
  • Maintain Jira as the single source of truth for project plans, progress, risks, and decisions
  • Provide clear and consistent project updates to executive leadership, department managers, and project teams
  • Tailor project communications to the needs and level of detail appropriate for each audience
  • Identify and implement improvements to project management methods, standards, and Jira workflows
  • Document effective practices and share lessons learned across projects and Project Managers
  • Support the continued development of EMIT's project management capabilities and execution standards
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of three years of project management experience preferred, with a proven track record of leading cross-functional projects through completion
  • Project management experience within software development or manufacturing preferred
  • Experience using Jira to manage projects across traditional and agile methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and influence teams without direct authority
  • Strong conflict-resolution, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, dependencies, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to provide effective updates to executives, managers, and project teams
  • Self-motivated and capable of working both independently and collaboratively
  • Bachelor's degree in a business or technical field is a plus
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent is preferred

We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome candidates from all backgrounds.
