Job description

Job DescriptionOverview

We are seeking a Project Manager - Automotive & Advanced Manufacturing to support major automotive OEMs, Tier1 suppliers, and emerging EV and battery manufacturing clients throughout Southeast Michigan. This role blends owner'srep style project management with onsite construction leadership, supporting complex capital programs from early planning through construction and commissioning.

The ideal candidate brings experience managing large, technically complex industrial facilities-including manufacturing plants, assembly lines, utilities, and infrastructure-while serving as a trusted client interface responsible for cost, schedule, quality, and safety outcomes.

Your role

Project & Client Leadership:

  • Act as AtkinsRealis' primary clientside representative for automotive and industrial manufacturing projects, interfacing directly with OEM leadership, design teams, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

  • Support execution of capital programs for new plants, expansions, retooling, and facility upgrades, including EV and battery manufacturing projects.

  • Represent AtkinsRealis' multidisciplinary capabilities (engineering, PMO, construction management, project controls) to automotive clients.

Planning, Cost & Schedule Management:

  • Analyze project scope and oversee development of budgets, staffing plans, schedules, and construction sequencing.

  • Monitor financial performance, change management, forecasting, and risk throughout project execution.

  • Coordinate with project controls, estimating, and scheduling teams to maintain alignment with client expectations.

Design & Technical Oversight:

  • Provide oversight of design development, constructability reviews, and technical alternatives for industrial facilities, utilities, and infrastructure systems.

  • Review engineering drawings, specifications, and design concepts produced by internal teams and subconsultants.

  • Evaluate alternatives to identify costeffective and technically sound solutions aligned with automotive production requirements.

Construction & Field Execution:

  • Oversee onsite construction activities from area handover through mechanical completion, testing, and commissioning.

  • Monitor contractor compliance with contract documents, safety standards, quality requirements, and project schedules.

  • Coordinate material deliveries, equipment installation, logistics, and site organization for active manufacturing facilities.

Safety, Quality & Compliance:

  • Implement and enforce Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) requirements aligned with AtkinsRealis and client standards.

  • Lead safety meetings and hold authority to stop work for unsafe conditions.

  • Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal regulations applicable to industrial construction in Michigan.

Team Leadership:

  • Coordinate work across engineers, construction managers, inspectors, and project controls personnel.

  • Mentor junior staff and support knowledge transfer across project teams.

About you
  • Education:

    • B.S. or M.S. in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.

    • Equivalent experience considered (7+ years with degree; additional experience required without degree).

  • Certifications (Preferred):

    • OSHA 10 required; OSHA 30 strongly preferred.

    • Professional Engineer (P.E.) or equivalent licensure a plus.

  • Experience:

    • Experience managing industrial, automotive, manufacturing, or large infrastructure projects.

    • Familiarity with fasttracked construction, brownfield sites, active manufacturing environments, or phased shutdowns is highly desirable.

    • Experience supporting large capital programs for OEM or industrial clients preferred.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Strong understanding of construction contracts, drawings, specifications, and field inspection practices.

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Primavera P6, PMIS, or similar tools preferred.

    • Ability to navigate webbased construction management platforms provided by clients.

  • Professional Attributes:

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical reporting and client presentations.

    • Clear, analytical approach to problemsolving and decisionmaking.

    • Ability to operate independently with minimal oversight in clientfacing environments.
