Job description

Position Summary

Under the direction of local operations leadership, the Engineering Manager is focused on running engineering efforts for the assigned service location.  Focus on profitability, efficiency and identify engineering opportunities, implementing strategies for growth and best business practices within assigned location.  Manager will mentor engineering team, provide applied electrical engineering, and technical expertise for customers in the areas of power systems studies, power quality analysis, installation, startup, maintenance, and repair.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for day-to-day operations of location’s engineering department.
    • Develop, grow, and maintain engineering services for assigned location including but not limited to arc flash studies, coordination studies, protection files, LOTO procedures, etc.
    • Build Customer relationships and provide competitive quotes for engineering services (meet on site, via phone, email, etc. and identify their needs).
    • Provide Engineering cost estimates and bid proposals as per location and RESA practices.
  • Responsible for hiring and training for direct reports.  Conduct interviews, complete job reviews, set and review professional development goals for direct reports.  Mentor and coach team of engineers; Audit performance quality and build training plans for direct reports.  Ensure staff is motivated and productive.
  • Make recommendations for promotions, transfers, hiring, or exiting staff members as business need dictates.
  • Perform and coach team to perform power system engineering assessments of electric power systems in the areas of proficiency of protection, short-circuit calculation, arc-flash hazard analysis, design improvements of medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Provided Technical expertise to internal/external customers as business need dictates.
  • Able to write and stamp power studies and/or verify and stamp other Engineer power studies.
  • Assess results and prepare written report of findings, proposals, and improvement solutions.
  • Perform electrical design improvements primarily to support upgrades of facilities’ electrical distribution system in conjunction with needs determined in the assessment stage.
  • Utilize Engineering skills and applicable codes and standards to implement electrical systems that are safe, dependable, and cost-effective.
  • Provide technical support and quality control for assigned projects from self-and/or Engineering Team member.
  • Work effectively with customers, peers and management to resolve customer issues.
  • Proficient in reading and accurately interpreting power system wiring diagrams including DC elementary drawings.
  • Able to develop one-line diagrams and develop new drawings for new work, upgrades and/or demo drawings utilizing AutoCAD.
  • Must be able to work safely and adhere to all electrical safety procedures.  All work and decisions shall be conducted in strict compliance of all regulatory laws.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or experience equivalency and a minimum of 10 years related experience. PE Required.
  • Previous professional experience in power engineering studies and design experience in industrial projects is preferred.
  • Proven Leadership skills. Focus on accuracy, customer service, profitability (job costing) and efficiencies.
  • Knowledge of various industry standards such as: NETA, NEC, OSHA and NFPA. Must be able to work safely and adhere to all electrical safety procedures.
  • Interpret specs to our customer requests to design technical solutions.
  • Short-Circuit, LV/MV Coordination, Arc Flash Experience with electric power systems, short-circuit, protective coordination, load flow, arc flash hazard analysis.
  • Strong computer skills with working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office as well as efficient use of Internet for standards/products/manufacturer research; Knowledge of a power system analysis software.
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with customers and peers. Effective communication (written and oral) and proven written and oral skills of technical topics.
  • Able to collaborate with various people throughout the organization and outside the organization-Customer Focused.
  • Dependable and responsible with good judgment, problem solving and organizational skills. Able to meet deadlines.
  • For positions that utilize a company vehicle, will be required to have a valid driver’s license.

Additional Information

Travel: up to 20%

Location: Blaine, MN 

Physical Demands: Lifting a minimum of 50lbs on a daily, crawling, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and working in non-ideal conditions.  Also responsible for completing computer work.
