What does a Manager of Power System Analysis do?

A Manager of Power System Analysis oversees the evaluation and optimization of electrical power systems within organizations or utilities. They lead teams that analyze grid reliability, load flow, stability, and system performance to ensure efficient and safe operation. This role involves using advanced simulation tools, coordinating with engineering teams, and supporting decision-making for infrastructure upgrades or expansion. Managers also ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations while mentoring staff and managing project budgets.

What are the typical challenges a Manager Power System Analysis faces when leading a multidisciplinary engineering team?

As a Manager Power System Analysis, one of the main challenges is coordinating and integrating input from professionals with diverse expertise, such as protection engineers, planning analysts, and grid operations specialists. Balancing project deadlines with the need for thorough, accurate technical analysis is critical, especially when dealing with complex system modeling or regulatory requirements. Effective communication and decision-making skills are essential to resolve conflicting priorities, foster collaboration, and ensure all team members are aligned with organizational goals. Additionally, staying updated on emerging technologies and grid modernization trends is vital to maintaining a competitive and resilient power system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager Power System Analysis, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager Power System Analysis, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems analysis, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as PSS/E, ETAP, or PowerWorld, and relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) are commonly required. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help manage teams and collaborate with stakeholders. These abilities ensure accurate system assessments, efficient project delivery, and reliable power system operations.

Job description

Job Description Description: This role will focus on electrical design coordination, field installation support, and commissioning of complex power and distribution systems in a highreliability environment. Responsibilities/skills: Lead electrical design coordination and implementation for the data center, including medium- and low-voltage distribution, backup power systems, and critical circuits supporting IT/server loads. Develop, review, and mark up electrical drawings and documentation, including single-line diagrams, load schedules, panel schedules, conduit routing, and bills of materials.

Coordinate with BIM/VDC teams to integrate electrical systems with mechanical, structural, fire protection, and architectural models, supporting clash detection and constructability reviews. Support the selection and application of major electrical equipment such as switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, PDUs, busways, and protective devices. Assist with power system studies including load flow, short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash analysis with internal and external engineering teams.

Ensure designs and installations comply with NEC, NFPA, IEEE standards, client specifications, and safety procedures. Provide field engineering support during construction by responding to RFIs, resolving site issues, reviewing submittals and shop drawings, and verifying installations meet design intent. Participate in testing and commissioning of electrical systems, including integrated systems testing and support of Uptime/Tier and owner performance requirements.

Assist with development of operations and maintenance documentation and support facility teams during project turnover. Contribute to project scheduling and phasing to support accelerated timelines typical of enterprise-level data center projects. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.

4-10 years of electrical engineering experience, preferably with an electrical contractor or in a design-build/power systems environment. Strong understanding of power distribution, lighting systems, grounding, and protective relaying fundamentals. Familiarity with NEC, NFPA 70E, and related electrical codes and standards.

Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar drafting tools; experience with power system analysis software (SKM, ETAP, EasyPower) is a plus. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with field teams, office staff, and client stakeholders.
