ABOUT THE ROLE

The Field Operations Superintendent is a pan-business role that is pivotal to growing our safety culture and ensuring compliance across the Asphalt and Construction businesses. The position works closely with all levels of the business to ensure structured processes are developed and integrated into our management operating system at the field level. The Construction Safety Officer needs to balance compliance, education and a practical knowledge of field work in their daily activities.

The Construction Safety Officer is integral in maintaining the capability of the GVA Asphalt, Pave, Construction, Civil and Infrastructure operations organization to increase construction revenue and capability. This includes actively participating in building a culture of agility, collaboration, and empowerment enabling continuous improvement. This includes finding practical value added solutions to improve our management operating system.

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Champion a proactive safety culture across Asphalt, Paving, Construction, Civil and Infrastructure operations by building engagement, accountability and ownership at all levels of the organization.
  • Strengthen the integration and effectiveness of the safety management operating system through practical field-based solutions that support operational excellence and regulatory compliance.
  • Partner with project teams, supervisors and frontline employees to identify risks, implement controls and continuously improve workplace safety performance.
  • Lead contractor safety management activities to ensure consistent standards, strong working relationships and compliance throughout all phases of construction projects.
  • Drive continuous improvement through the analysis of incidents, trends, observations and leading indicators, translating findings into meaningful corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support the successful delivery of construction projects by balancing safety requirements with operational needs and providing practical guidance to field teams.
  • Enhance workforce capability through coaching, mentoring and safety education that increases awareness, competency and compliance across the business.
  • Foster collaboration between operations, management and contractors to create a unified approach to safety, risk management and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Required Work Experience: Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety, construction operations, or a related field, with demonstrated success supporting large-scale construction, civil infrastructure, asphalt or industrial operations.
  • Required Training/Certifications: Certified industrial hygienist (CIH), registered occupational hygienist (ROH), certified safety professional (CSP), Canadian registered safety professional (CRSP) or professional engineer (P. Eng.) preferred. OFA 3 OR Advanced First Aid designation preferred. NCSO (National Council Safety Officer - Professional Designation preferred or in progress. Current Fall Protection, Confined Space, Energy Isolation or electrical training, MEWPS (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms), Rigging Certification all preferred. Joint Health and Safety Committee Meeting Training required.
  • Required Technical Skills: Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, SAP, SiteDocs.
  • Travel Requirements: 11-20%.

  • Ability to articulate processes, investigation findings and educational material across all levels of the business.

  • Strong communication and great organization skills.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and managing priorities.
  • High capacity of working under pressure and stress.
  • Good field experience in the construction sector.
  • Working knowledge of claims management and post incident management.
  • Knowledge of Transportation Related Civil Construction, Heavy Civil Infrastructure preferred.
  • Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
