Position Summary and Qualifications

The salary range shown represents the minimum to midpoint salary for this position. The actual salary offered will depend on qualifications and experience.
Skilled work in the splicing, terminating, testing, repairing fiber optic infrastructure. Reports to the OSP Crew Leader.
Ensures the fiber optic network is completely documented. Conducts periodic audits of the fiberoptic infrastructure to confirm documentation accuracy.
Performs single and mass fusion splicing.
Responsible for new splicing as well as repair splicing. May also be called on to also assist with CAT-5 or CAT-6 installations and troubleshooting.
Performs construction and maintenance job tasks associated with Fiber Optic cable. Conforms to policies and procedures for safe work practices, the proper use of vehicles, tools, and equipment associated with accepted communication line work practices.
Troubleshoots fiber network problems, identifies problems, and creates solutions. Consults Network Engineering staff to resolve and troubleshoot network equipment problems and performance issues.
Performs testing, configuration, installation, and troubleshooting of ONT edge electronics hardware used in implementing Broadband Services.
Performs technical testing of fiber optic cables in the field using an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR).
Must be able to determine acceptable losses of transmitted light signals across fusion and mechanical splices.
Performs testing on fiber optic cables to pinpoint any breaks in the cable when troubleshooting customer circuits.
Visually identifies fibers through labeling and color-coding. Makes handwritten notes and red-lines drawings.
Tracks usage of fiber splicing equipment including splice enclosures, splice trays, fan-out kits, and fusion protection tubes to ensure an adequate stock for daily activity.
Performs other duties, as assigned.
High School Diploma or GED from an accredited educational institution is required. Minimum of 3 years of work experience as a Telecommunications Technician with at least 1 year experience splicing fiber. Completion of Advanced OSP Technician certification and able to demonstrate competence in job functions and required abilities.
When considering new job applicants, comparable amounts of training and experience may be substituted in lieu of some of the minimum qualifications.
Must possess:

  • Understanding of fiber Infrastructure and requirements for penetration of buildings for fiber termination.

HEALTH INSURANCE: Effective for employees and dependents on the first day of the month following completion of 30 days continuous service. FPUA pays most of employee premium and 71% of the dependent premium.
DENTAL INSURANCE - Becomes effective for employees and dependents on the first day of the month following completion of 30 days continuous service. FPUA pays 100% of employee premium and 60% of the dependent premium.
VISION - Becomes effective for employees and dependents on the first day of the month following completion of 30 days continuous service. FPUA pays 100% of employee premium eye care coverage for employees and a portion for their family members, including eye exams, glasses, contact lenses, etc.
LIFE INSURANCE - TERM (EMPLOYEES ONLY) - Life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment policy equal to 1x employee's annual salary. Employees may also purchase, on a voluntary basis, additional life insurance through payroll deduction in $10,000 increments up to $100,000.
LONG TERM DISABILITY - Employees out for more than 90 days due to a disabling injury or illness will receive 60% of wage, up to $4,500 per month.
