Job description

TEACHER’S AIDE

Department: Youth Services Center                                                FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Classification/Level:  Part-Time                                                      Date:  1/26/2021

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Teacher’s Aide assists the licensed classroom teacher with instructional support services to the teacher necessary to educate students placed at the Youth Services Center.  Instruction must incorporate Indiana’s Academic Standards that align with federal and state standards as required by law.  This position is not covered as defined by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.          

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supports and assists the licensed classroom teacher with instruction and clerical tasks.
  • Prepares materials and equipment for activities and oversees instructional activities to help students understand lessons.
  • Assists and works with students who need additional instruction either in small groups or with one student at a time.
  • May communicate with each student’s school of origin and teachers.
  • Access and work with students at all different academic levels at any given time.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED and at least two years of experience working with youth or young adults
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Must have strong office, computer and oral and written communication skills
  • Possess knowledge of child guidance principles and practices, general instructional methods and techniques and basic subjects taught within District schools, including, but not limited to, arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading
  • Strong de-escalation skills and ability to be patient with abused, neglected and delinquent youth
  • Responsive to quickly changing dynamics within a classroom setting
  • Ability to motivate students to learn
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

The Teacher’s Aide maintains frequent contact with the Youth Services Center Teacher, other County employees, neglected, abused and troubled youth regarding instructional and educational support and with student’s school of origin and teachers.

 

 

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Teacher’s Aide position requires some lifting, bending, pushing and/or pulling loads, reaching over head, kneeling and exposure to dangerous equipment and chemicals.  Frequent typing including transcription and proofreading and attention to detail, monitoring equipment and detailed inspection are required.  The Teacher’s Aide has frequent interactions with hostile and aggressive youth.

8:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. (3.5 hours/day)
