Job description

Position Purpose

Lead Sleep Technician oversees the nighttime sleep technicians by maintaining staff schedule, ordering appropriate supplies, assist with training, and performing overnight sleep studies to assist in the evaluation and treatment of sleep patients in compliance with AASM guidelines.

Nature and Scope

Sleep Lab Operations

  1. Acts as a contact person for technical issues within the department on all shifts.
  2. Monitors staff performance, provides feedback for performance appraisals, and consults with the Manager on recruitment and hiring of technical staff.
  3. Supervises work assignments of technical staff, thereby ensuring the efficient use of resources and timely completion of tasks.
  4. Assists in night time lab operations, including scoring, patient testing, and titrations.
  5. Assists in monitoring of the quality assurance program for the Sleep Lab.
  6. Performs routine maintenance and troubleshoots all monitoring equipment utilized within the department.
  7. Assists in the training of all new technical staff as well as education programs for the technical staff.
  8. Assists manager in overseeing technician schedule and staffing.
  9. Performs materials management by maintaining appropriate inventory of technical supplies.
  10. Assist manager in development of outreach programs in order to provide new services.
  11. Discuss with the providers and manager any problems or concerns with the recorded/scored studies
  12. Must possess the ability to make maximum use of their time with minimal direction.
  13. Must demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensor, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric patient served, and meets standards of quality as measured by the department standards.

Sleep Study Procedures

  1. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  2. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.
  3. Perform patient education and instruction appropriate for out of center sleep testing.
  4. Demonstrate adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures for portable monitoring devices.
  5. Demonstrate adherence to AASM scoring parameters for OCST; identify artifact, inadequate signals and study failures and generate an accurate report.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.
  2. Perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.
  3. Maintain current RPSGT certificate and CPR or BCLS certification.
  4. Demonstrate computer skills appropriate for the position.
  5. Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate social skills.
  7. Demonstrate customer service skills.
  8. Demonstrate critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  9. Demonstrate teamwork skills. Follow HIPAA policies to maintain the privacy and security of patient information.
  10. Demonstrate ability to follow direction.
  11. Respond to sleep patient’s procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.
  12. Provide patient education utilizing sleep center specific protocols.
  13. Adhere to sleep center policies related to quality assurance.
  14. Evaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory.
  15. Review and evaluate sleep studies and provide feedback to staff.
  16. Demonstrate the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.
  17. Comply with professional standards of conduct.
  18. Must demonstrate good organizational skills.
  19. Assist the Sleep Lab Operations Manager in all aspects of sleep center operations.

The Lead Sleep Technician will report to the Sleep Center Manager.

This position does provide patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

3 years of Sleep Technician or Clinical Sleep experience

License(s):

None

Certification(s):

Obtain and maintain BLS certification by the American Heart Association (AHA) standards required.

Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.

In addition, must complete a minimum of ten continuing education requirements per year, as well as participate in the monthly inter-scoring reliability through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
