Job description

Does it excite you to play a leading role in ensuring safe, efficient, laboratory operations? Do you have experience with facilities management in a pharma or biotech setting, including lab safety, scientific equipment management, and compliance with EHS/OSHA and other regulations? If this sounds like you, and you are ready to take on a broad area of responsibilities, then you could be our new colleague.

Your new position
As Lab Manager, you are responsible for enabling safe, compliant, and uninterrupted daily operations at Zealand Pharma's new research unit in Cambridge, MA. You will partner closely with stakeholders in the research organization to manage the laboratory spaces, equipment, and service contracts, and drive continuous facilities maintenance and site improvement projects to achieve operational excellence. You will take the lead in building a strong culture of safety and ensuring EHS, OSHA, and other relevant regulatory compliance, including hazardous waste handling.

We offer exciting responsibilities:

  • Ensure efficient and safe laboratory operations, including walkthroughs, issue triage, and continuous improvement
  • Take point with site landlord and other contractors to ensure improvements and routine maintenance to the facility, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and security
  • Drive site development and operational excellence, including initial lab re-fit and continuous improvement projects
  • Manage hazardous waste processes end-to-end, including segregation, labeling, storage, pickup coordination, and documentation
  • Build a culture of safety through leadership, communication, and close partnership with laboratory scientists and safety contractors. Ensure emergency preparedness through development of action plans, evacuation drills, communication plans, and other preventative measures.
  • Together with the IT team and the site Office Manager, establish and maintain systems for site safety and integrity, including badge access, security cameras, and remote site monitoring for e.g. loss of temperature control or flooding in the lab environment.
  • Maintain EHS/OSHA and other applicable regulatory compliance through incident-reporting, corrective actions, and audit readiness
  • Own site operational programs through internal staff and contract services in both the lab and office facility, including chemical inventory, SDS access, signage, lab wash, restocking of gasses, dry ice, and ice, PPE supply and restocking, custodial services, and general housekeeping standards
  • Manage lab equipment service agreements and vendor performance to ensure timely maintenance, calibration, and repairs

Your profile
The ideal candidate is structured, service-minded, and proactive, with a strong focus on safety and operational excellence. The role requires confident stakeholder management, clear communication, and the ability to prioritize effectively in a dynamic lab setting. A practical, hands-on approach and sound judgement are essential to keep operations running smoothly.

  • Experience in wet-lab operations and day-to-day laboratory management in an industrial or biotech setting
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and common EHS practices relevant to laboratory environments
  • Demonstrated experience managing chemical and biological waste disposal with external vendors
  • Experience with lab equipment lifecycle support, including service contracts, maintenance scheduling, and vendor coordination
  • Strong documentation skills (SOPs, logs, training records) and comfort driving compliance processes
  • Relevant education or training in a scientific, engineering, or EHS-related discipline

Your new team
You will join Discovery Research and collaborate closely with EHS and wet-lab stakeholders to support safe, compliant laboratory operations. The role interfaces with vendors and internal partners to ensure facilities, equipment, and operational processes meet business needs and regulatory expectations. Reports to the head of Molecular Platform Development.
