Job description

Project Manager – Healthcare
For over four decades, Schmidt Associates has built our entire approach on the idea of Servant Leadership. As servant leaders, our design team seeks to deeply understand our clients and put their mission and goals above our own. This ensures that each design reflects the client—not us—and delivers the best possible outcomes in support of their mission.
Our full-service firm has offices in Indianapolis, IN, and Louisville, KY. Our work is woven into communities through our six design studios: K-12 Education, Higher Education, Healthcare, Workplace, Community, and Lifestyle.
Our team of professionals includes architects, MEPTC engineers, interior designers, energy engineers, landscape architects, construction administration professionals, and administrative and support staff—all working together to serve clients’ needs, build stronger communities, and improve lives. Schmidt Associates is seeking a seasoned Project Manager to join our Healthcare studio.
The Project Manager will be responsible for the tactical implementation of healthcare projects, achieving project objectives, ensuring financial performance, and building strong client relationships that lead to repeat work and referrals. The ideal candidate is highly accountable for project performance, schedule, and cost, while maintaining a strong focus on patient-centered outcomes and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities for Healthcare Projects:
  • Lead the planning, design, and delivery of healthcare projects, including hospitals, outpatient facilities, medical office buildings, ambulatory care centers, and specialized clinical environments.
  • Collaborate closely with healthcare clients, clinicians, and stakeholders to understand care delivery models, patient experience goals, and operational workflows, ensuring design solutions align with clinical needs and organizational objectives.
  • Oversee project budgets and schedules while ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and standards, including FGI Guidelines, HIPAA considerations, life safety codes, and infection control requirements.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, including architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors, to ensure seamless integration of building systems and clinical functionality.
  • Support planning for phased construction and renovation projects in active healthcare environments, minimizing disruption to patient care and facility operations.
  • Stay informed on emerging trends in healthcare design, including patient-centered care, staff well-being, flexibility, technology integration, and sustainability, and apply these insights to project delivery.
  • Foster strong, trust-based client relationships that support long-term partnerships and future opportunities.
Qualifications:
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and project management skills, with experience in healthcare, higher education, or other complex project types.
  • Ability to balance technical solutions with schedule, cost, and the human-centered needs of patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain client relationships.
  • Working knowledge of the design and construction process, particularly within regulated environments.
Experience/Education:
  • 5–8 years of direct project management experience
  • Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field
  • PMP, Lean, or Six Sigma certification is a plus
  • AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) experience required
  • Demonstrated experience managing healthcare projects strongly preferred
Join our team and contribute to creating transformative healthcare environments that enhance patient care, support caregivers, and strengthen the communities we serve.
