Manager External Reporting information

What does a manager external reporting do?

A Manager of External Reporting oversees the preparation and submission of a company's financial statements and reports for external stakeholders, such as regulatory agencies, investors, and auditors. They ensure that all reports comply with relevant accounting standards (like GAAP or IFRS) and regulatory requirements. The role typically involves coordinating with internal finance teams, managing reporting deadlines, and staying up to date with changes in reporting rules. Their work is crucial for maintaining transparency and building trust with external parties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager external reporting?

To thrive as a Manager External Reporting, you need strong expertise in financial accounting, reporting standards (such as US GAAP or IFRS), and a relevant degree, often coupled with a CPA or similar certification. Proficiency in financial reporting systems like Oracle, SAP, or Hyperion, and advanced Excel skills are typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills ensure accurate, compliant financial disclosures and facilitate clear communication with stakeholders and regulatory bodies.

What are some common challenges faced by a manager external reporting, and how can they be addressed?

Managers of External Reporting often face the challenge of keeping up with rapidly changing accounting standards and regulatory requirements, which can impact how financial statements are prepared and disclosed. To address this, staying current through continuous professional education and maintaining strong communication with auditors and regulatory bodies is essential. Additionally, coordinating inputs from cross-functional teams and ensuring data accuracy under tight deadlines can be demanding, so strong project management skills and a collaborative approach are important for success in this role.

Job description

As part of Waymo's Legal team, you will work on the exciting legal issues surrounding our transformational autonomous driving technology and help drive our business lines forward from technology ideation through scaled commercial deployment. We partner with our public policy, safety, security and privacy experts to define transportation policy for the autonomous driving world to come, advising on regulatory changes that support and protect our users around the world. We collaborate with our engineering, product, strategy and operations teams to develop and protect our intellectual property portfolio and drive our corporate and commercial transactions. We enable compliance with an increasingly complex and dynamic range of global regulations. And we anticipate, mitigate, and litigate high-profile and precedent-setting legal matters.

This role follows a hybrid work schedule and reports to the Lead, External Reporting

You will:

  • Work independently in an assigned area of external data reporting to autonomous vehicle regulators
  • Intake new or updated regulations focused on regulatory reporting, and work with Legal, Product, Engineering, and TPgM teams to establish policies and procedures to operationalize requirements for Waymo's operations
  • Act as a subject matter expert to support cross functional teams that are implementing compliance controls and tooling to support reporting
  • Assist in the management, collection, quality controls, submission, and tooling development for reportable data across Waymo's markets
  • Support ad hoc projects to respond to regulator requests for data
  • Analyze and communicate identified trends, gaps, predictions, and opportunities for process improvement

You have:

  • At least 4 years experience working on an external data reporting program, preferably at a safety-focused, highly-regulated organization
  • Strong experience working with regulations and regulatory bodies in the APAC Region
  • Exceptional attention to detail, both in written and verbal communication
  • Technical aptitude with ability to quickly learn proprietary software
  • Analytical background with the ability to source and analyze data, identify deficiencies or trends, and present facts or trends
  • Demonstrated project and program management skills while working in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment

We prefer:

  • Proficiency speaking and writing in Japanese, with the ability to prepare technical data reporting and interact with local partners and regulators
  • Experience working with autonomous vehicles, transportation, or ride hailing regulations
  • Experience managing external partners and third party vendors
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize turning repetitive tasks into scaled, automated workflows
  • Willingness and flexibility to work non-standard hours, as required, to collaborate with teams based in the APAC region

Travel Requirements:

  • This individual may travel to the APAC region up to 4x per year, or approximately 10% of the time
