Position Overview

Highly skilled Security Professional. Assigned to a fixed post or performs preventive patrol in an assigned area on foot or by vehicle. Provides armed protection of corporate property, assets, personnel and visitors against illegal entry, theft, vandalism, safety hazards and fire. Monitors security cameras, access controls, visitor management and related systems.


Essential Job Functions

  • Works in environments and under conditions that require carrying authorized weapons and ammunition, the use of protective gear and devices, and awareness of personal safety and safety of others.
  • Monitors personnel movements to and from controlled access areas.
  • Responsible for checking in and properly vetting all campus visitors.
  • Responds to gate bypasses and performs gate overrides.
  • Conducts standbys for failed drug tests, employee terminations and other personnel actions as required.
  • Patrols grounds and parking areas by vehicle and on foot; observes employees, contractors and visitors.
  • When assigned patrol duty, may be required to oversee Security Operations Center in the absence of higher authority.
  • Identifies vehicles parked in violation of law or company policy and takes corrective action.
  • Notifies, assists, and directs external first responders and internal emergency response teams as required.
  • Ensures security management is apprised of all significant and unusual events in a timely fashion.
  • Documents daily activities; conducts preliminary investigations and prepares reports concerning personal injury, property damage, theft, or describing problems or incidents.
  • When assigned patrol duty, may be required to transport employees to and from hospital for nonemergent care.
  • Responds to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials, inclement weather and other incidents.
  • Assists with traffic flow on campus and at gate entrances.
  • Maintains and monitors security cameras, access controls, visitor management and related systems.
  • Depending upon work assignment, may be required to weigh/inspect truckloads and enter load information and customer/truck information into computer.
  • Maintains proficiency in the use of all assigned protective equipment, restraint devices and weapons.
  • Attends training and other required company functions.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate. College level course work and specialized training in law enforcement, criminal justice, security, emergency management and/or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years Security, Military, Emergency Management, Law Enforcement and/or other equivalent experience required; or a satisfactory equivalent combination of knowledge and experience. Prior supervisory and training experience is strongly preferred.
  • Successful completion of a tactical handgun or rifle course is preferred.
  • Attendance to Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Security Operations policy and procedures.
  • Successful completion of employment background check and medical screening.
  • Proof of completion of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory test or equivalent (proof of completion of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory test shall be on the prescribed form Declaration of Psychological and Emotional Health and shall be signed by a licensed psychologist).
  • Has or is able to obtain Level III Commissioned Security Officer license.
  • Has a valid driver license and a satisfactory driving record that conforms to the company's insurance policy and requirements.
  • Ability to read and write the English language.
  • Ability to meet and continue to meet all applicable state licensing requirements for security officers.
  • Ability to utilize rapid and effective judgement in responding to unusual or emergency situations using appropriate escalation of force level.
  • Effective interpersonal skills; specifically, for addressing potential conflicts.
  • Effective communication skills to express ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
  • Ability to accurately perform routine data entry into a computer, make accurate basic mathematical calculations and accurately post and keep legible records.
  • Ability to work overtime and all shifts (day, evening, night, weekends and holidays) as needed.
  • Ability to take charge while responding professionally and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and have an ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to assume a variety of bodily positions and postures possibly for long periods of time to include sitting, standing, bending, reaching, leaning, pushing, pulling, grasping, turning, twisting, lifting and walking. Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Ability to frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally move objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency with duty weapons through training and certification by the department firearms instructor.
  • Ability to operate vehicle in a safe and prudent manner. Must be able to react and move rapidly from a sedentary to active condition in response to environmental or duty-related situations or events.
  • Must be able to perform required duties for extended periods of time to include time worked in excess of the normal daily day shift or rotating shift work.
  • Must have auditory capability to hear alarms, monitors, intruders, etc.; must have olfactory capability to smell dangerous gases, fires, etc. Requires good eyesight (corrective lenses may be used) with accurate close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
