Job Summary: Distribution Design Engineering I
About the Role
Join our team as a Distribution Design Engineer I in Seattle, WA, and play a pivotal role in shaping the region's electric distribution infrastructure. This hybrid position offers the chance to work on both overhead and underground distribution projects, leveraging the latest technologies in GIS and CAD, while collaborating with a dynamic team of engineering professionals. You'll be exposed to a variety of project types, from grid hardening and substation optimization to joint-use and street lighting initiatives, with opportunities for career advancement and professional growth.
Responsibilities
- Develop and prepare construction work packages for electrical distribution systems (4kV-138kV)
- Conduct field inspections and collect data to inform engineering design
- Perform engineering calculations, including structural analysis, voltage drop, cable pulling, and guying
- Utilize GIS, CAD, Work Management Systems, and other tools to design and document projects
- Identify and resolve utility conflicts and ensure compliance with safety, design, and quality standards
- Prepare permitting documents and facilitate Right-of-Way acquisition
- Support construction teams with technical guidance and post-construction reviews
- Analyze outage root causes and design mitigation solutions
- Provide customer advocacy, including easement acquisition and cost estimation
Required Skills and Experience
- BS Degree from an ABET-accredited Engineering program
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
- Willing and able to perform both fieldwork and office-based tasks
- Capable of working outdoors and driving to local job sites (must have personal vehicle)
- Basic knowledge of engineering principles in electric distribution
Preferred Skills
- Experience with NESC Standards
- Familiarity with ESRI, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and GIS platforms
- Previous exposure to structural pole modeling and electrical power calculations
