Job Description - MANAGER-DATA SCIENTIST - OPHTHALMOLOGY (T235873)

MANAGER-DATA SCIENTIST - OPHTHALMOLOGY - ( T235873 )

Description

We are seeking a data science manager to assist us with developing and managing a large repository of electronic health record data of patients with ocular diseases.

This position will use specific computer programs to extract relevant clinical variables from the EPIC electronic health record, clean and organize the data in a format to facilitate analysis of the data.

They will also assist with linking data from the repository to other internal and external data sources, including working with IT staff at other academic institutions to facilitate data extraction from their databases to incorporate such data into the repository.

They will spend most of their time working with clinicians and biostatisticians in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

Manages a team of data scientist professionals that conduct research and develop tools and processes that improve the outcomes and quality of research projects.

Recruits, hires, trains, and coaches staff with very high level analytical and technical skills.

Determines innovative ways to improve data and search quality, and predictive capabilities.

Develops prototypes, proof of concepts, algorithms, predictive models, and custom analysis.

Designs and builds new data set processes for modeling, data mining, and production purposes.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Research discrepancies and resolve obstacles, facilitating continuous improvement and progress.
  • Analyze data based on findings of others to either support those findings or explain why something is the way it is.
  • Investigate files that fail our pipeline; findings may highlight additional steps or modifications.
  • Engage with external site clinical and technical leads across various roles, both internally and externally.
  • Reach out to determine status, discuss obstacles, provide feedback and instruction.
  • Function as project manager, tracking the status of active sites and ensuring the repository is maintained with current data while assisting approximately 20 additional sites in achieving active status.
  • Manage a team of technical professionals building and enhancing a repository for ophthalmologic data sourced from over 25 sites.
  • Keep track of staff tasks, focus on current goals, and brainstorm ideas.
  • Develop, maintain, and utilize a comprehensive database to monitor the status of multiple projects.
  • Use a separate database to keep track of sites, batches of data, reviews, and notes.
  • Generate reports from this database for feedback to sites and internal reporting.
  • Track staff tasks and evolve the database as needed.
  • Identify and automate manual efforts to streamline data pipelines.
  • Explain to others what is needed to enable automation.
  • Establish familiarity with external data sources, determine relationships with internal data, and analyze applications of combined data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $126,470 - $205,515

Location

Onsite in Birmingham, Alabama. No option for hybrid or remote.

Qualifications

Doctorate degree in a related field and seven (7) years of related experience OR Master's degree in a related field and nine (9) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferred
  • Proficiency certification with EPIC training
  • 5-10 years of experience directly related to the responsibilities specified
  • Proficiency with Oracle databases, PL/SQL, or MS SQL Server T-SQL
  • Knowledge of Tableau, SAS, R, a plus
