Job description

OBD Fleet Durability Analytics Engineer

About Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI)

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) serves as Hyundai Motor Group's North American R&D headquarters, supporting Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis products in one of the world's most competitive automotive markets. Our teams drive innovation across product planning, design, engineering, quality, testing, and advanced technology development.

With our main R&D campus in Michigan and additional engineering, development, and proving ground facilities in California, HATCI provides a dynamic environment where ideas accelerate into real-world vehicle advancements.

About the Team

The Emissions and OBD Validation (EMOV) team is part of the Electrified Propulsion division of HATCI. We advance propulsion efficiency and performance across Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis internal combustion and hybrid powertrains, directly shaping the refinement, competitiveness, and technological leadership of the vehicles our customers drive every day. EMOV leads local market testing and validation of engine and electrified propulsion management systems controlling vehicle emissions and diagnostics.

Position Overview

We are seeking an innovative, analytically-minded, and self-driven OBD Fleet Durability Analytics Engineer to join our team in Superior Township, Michigan. In this role, you will drive data-driven decision making for the validation of engine management and on-board diagnostics systems for pre-production vehicles undergoing extensive mileage accumulation and emissions durability testing. You will analyze CAN/XCP parameters collected from our instrumented fleet vehicles to identify failure modes, detect early indicators of component degradation, and validate the robustness of OBD calibrations and engine management calibrations.

This position offers the opportunity to work with data-intensive development programs, advanced calibration technologies, and cross-functional engineering teams. You will help shape the next generation of internal combustion, hybrid, and electrified propulsion systems through rigorous data analysis, predictive analytics, and data-driven insights that directly inform calibration refinement and vehicle durability validation.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead data analytics activities for engine management and OBD systems using second-by-second vehicle data collected from long-term fleet testing
  • Develop and execute statistical analysis plans to extract trends, detect anomalies, and identify correlations between operating conditions and system performance degradation
  • Perform predictive analytics modeling to forecast potential failures and validate the effectiveness of OBD diagnostic monitors during extended durability testing
  • Set up instrumentation and monitor fleet vehicles to ensure accurate data acquisition from data loggers (XCP/CAN), reliable test execution, and data integrity
  • Analyze multivariate time-series data using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools to perform root cause analysis on high-occurrence issues and calibration weaknesses
  • Conduct data-driven investigations using statistical hypothesis testing and cross-functional collaboration to evaluate diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and OBD monitor robustness
  • Support fleet operation activities including calibration updates, software flashing, diagnostic evaluation, and instrumentation troubleshooting
  • Prepare advanced technical visualizations and dashboards to communicate data findings, trends, and actionable recommendations to calibration engineers and engineering leadership
  • Validate aftertreatment durability and regulatory compliance through analysis of emissions testing data at defined mileage intervals
  • Evaluate emerging data analytics technologies that support enhanced OBD validation, predictive maintenance capabilities, and compliance with evolving emissions regulations
  • Manage fleet data governance including database administration, parameter definition validation, signal quality assurance, and test data archival
  • Plan, coordinate, and track analytics project activities to ensure timely and high-quality execution aligned with program milestones
  • Travel up to 15% both domestically and internationally

Core Competencies

  • Advanced proficiency in Python - data manipulation (Pandas, NumPy), statistical analysis (SciPy, Statsmodels), and time-series analysis frameworks
  • SQL database management - querying, joining, and optimizing large datasets from fleet data loggers
  • Statistical analysis expertise - regression modeling, hypothesis testing, correlation analysis, and multivariate analysis techniques (PCA, clustering)
  • Time-series analytics - trend detection, anomaly identification, and pattern recognition across long-duration vehicle operating data
  • Data visualization - creating technical dashboards and visualizations using Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly, or Power BI/Tableau
  • Predictive analytics modeling - machine learning techniques (classification, regression) for fault prediction and OBD monitor validation
  • Strong foundation in engine controls, combustion, and exhaust aftertreatment systems
  • Knowledge of diagnostic trouble code (DTC) development and OBD monitor calibration processes
  • Understanding of EPA and CARB emissions and OBD regulatory requirements and testing procedures
  • Experience with hybrid powertrain operation and associated propulsion control strategies
  • Ability to specify, configure, and operate data acquisition systems and instrumentation for fleet vehicles
  • Experience with vehicle calibration tools such as ETAS INCA, MDA, or similar ECU calibration platforms
