They oversee data pipeline development, ensure data quality, and collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions. In addition to technical expertise, they manage project timelines, mentor team members, and help drive data-driven decision-making across the organization.

How does a manager data analytics engineer typically balance technical project work with team leadership responsibilities?

Job description

Technical Product Manager, Data Strategy
About the role
At Vanguard, we're committed to helping our clients achieve long-term financial success through clarity, discipline, and a focus on what matters most. As a Technical Product Manager in Data Strategy, you'll play a key role in making high-quality, trusted data accessible across the organization. Your work will enable better decisions, improve client outcomes, and support scalable, enterprise-wide data solutions. You'll collaborate with teammates across engineering, analytics, and business functions to build data products that are reliable, well-governed, and designed for real-world impact.
What you'll do
  • Lead the vision, strategy, and roadmap for master and reference data products, with accountability across the full data lifecycle-ingestion, transformation, modeling, orchestration, storage, and consumption.
  • Partner with data engineering, analytics, infrastructure, governance, and business teams to define and apply best practices for master data management (MDM), reference data management (RDM), data modeling, and data quality.
  • Use SQL and data profiling techniques to explore data, validate requirements, assess quality, and identify trends or issues that inform priorities and decisions.
  • Translate business needs into clear, actionable data product requirements, including schemas, hierarchies, transformations, service-level agreements (SLAs), and consumption patterns.
  • Guide delivery teams on effective data product practices, including backlog structure, dependency management, and outcome-based planning.
  • Collaborate with engineering and stakeholders to troubleshoot and resolve production issues such as data quality defects, pipeline failures, or downstream reporting impacts, using root-cause analysis to drive sustainable solutions.
  • Support the launch and adoption of data products by improving usability, consistency, and trust across operational systems, analytics, and reporting.
  • Continuously improve data quality-accuracy, completeness, consistency, and timeliness-while balancing governance needs with speed and usability.
  • Contribute to prioritization and roadmap discussions by highlighting data risks, architectural dependencies, and platform considerations.
  • Participate in agile delivery practices, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, design reviews, and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) for data pipelines.
  • Contribute to broader data initiatives such as metadata management, data discoverability, governance workflows, and domain-based ownership models.

What we're looking for
  • Undergraduate degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in technical product management, data, or a related field.
  • Experience working with data engineering, business intelligence, or analytics engineering concepts, including data modeling and BI tools.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience using data to inform decisions, including hands-on work with SQL or similar tools.
  • Advanced degree in information technology or related field is a plus.
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives or projects is preferred.
