Job description

Department

Technology, Data & Analytics

The Data & Analytics team is Justworks' data and AI center of excellence - a connected set of functions spanning business intelligence, data science, analytics engineering, platform data/ML engineering and AI builders. We've grown significantly over the last several years and continue to build momentum across the business, leveling up maturity in how we deliver insights, govern data, and enable the company to make better decisions. You'll find a highly collaborative & diverse group motivated by craft, shared learning, and a genuine commitment to growing our impact for customers while evolving how we work together for our people. Come build with us!

The Analytics Engineering team sits at the center of how Justworks turns raw data into the foundation for trustworthy analysis and reporting across the company.

Who You Are

You are a data leader with a curious mindset, a passion for building, and an eye for optimization. You thrive when enabling the strategic and effective use of data within and outside of a data team. You are adept at understanding business challenges and framing them as enablement opportunities. You possess strong empathy, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail, enabling you to work effectively with your team and cross-functional partners. You can clearly translate complex data concepts into assets that enable data-informed strategy, and have a growing track record of guiding projects to successful outcomes.

We're seeking a Senior Manager of Analytics Engineering to lead our analytics engineering team, reporting directly to our Senior Director of Data & Analytics. You'll set the technical direction and roadmap for analytics engineering, grow and develop your team, and partner closely with Business Intelligence, Data Governance, and Data Platform Engineering leadership to make sure our data foundation scales with the business.

You'll stay close enough to the work to be a credible technical voice (reviewing designs, unblocking hard modeling problems) while representing analytics engineering in broader DNA and cross-functional planning and decision-making. This role requires a strong analytical and data modeling background, a deep understanding of the modern data stack, and a passion for mentoring and growing teams.

  • Uphold and evolve best practices for data model development, testing, and documentation within your team to deliver iteratively and efficiently.
  • Lead significant data architecture decisions - including data model design and implementation choices that affect teams beyond your own.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead and develop a team of analytics engineers, fostering their professional growth through goal-setting, coaching, feedback, and recognition.
  • Manage project priorities and timelines for your team, ensuring the timely delivery of rigorous, impactful solutions while upholding high standards for data quality and integrity.
  • Recruit, hire, and scale the analytics engineering team as our data platform and organizational needs grow.

Cross-Functional Partnership & Delivery

  • Collaborate with Data & Analytics leadership and cross-functional teams (Engineering, Operations, and business teams) to understand requirements and translate them into executable projects and data products.
  • Partner with and influence upstream teams to raise the bar on data quality at the source, advocating for changes that prevent downstream data and reporting issues.
  • Build relationships with cross-functional leads to promote the adoption of new methods, technologies, and self-service data tools that help the organization scale.
  • Serve as the senior voice for analytics engineering in cross-functional and DNA leadership planning conversations, representing your team's capacity, priorities, and tradeoffs.
How You Will Do Your Work

As a Sr. Manager, Data Platform Engineering,, how results are achieved is paramount for your success and ultimately results in our success as an organization. In this role, your foundational knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal attributes are anchored in the following competencies:

  • Integrity - Simply put, do what you say and say what you'll do. You're honest and forthright, have a strong moral compass, and strive to match your words with your actions while leading by example.
  • Simplicity - Be like Einstein: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler."
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in a data role such as analytics engineering, data engineering, or data warehousing, with hands-on experience designing and building scalable data models and ETL/ELT pipelines.
  • 4+ years in people management, with a proven track record of developing and managing high-performing teams.
