Manager Computational Design Architecture information

What does a manager of computational design architecture do?

A Manager of Computational Design Architecture leads teams in utilizing advanced digital tools and computational methods to optimize and innovate architectural design processes. They oversee the integration of computational workflows, such as parametric modeling, automation, and data analysis, into architectural projects. This role involves collaborating with architects, engineers, and software developers to push the boundaries of design efficiency, performance, and creativity. Additionally, they are responsible for mentoring team members, implementing best practices, and staying current with emerging technologies in computational design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager of computational design architecture?

To excel as a Manager in Computational Design Architecture, you need a strong background in architectural design, computational methods, and leadership, often supported by a degree in architecture or a related field. Proficiency with parametric design tools like Grasshopper, Rhino, Revit, and programming languages such as Python or C# is typically required. Strong project management, communication, and team leadership skills set outstanding candidates apart. These capabilities are crucial for driving innovative design solutions, managing interdisciplinary teams, and ensuring project success in a technologically advanced architectural environment.

How does a manager of computational design architecture typically collaborate with other teams during the design process?

A Manager of Computational Design Architecture frequently works cross-functionally with architects, engineers, and software developers to integrate computational tools and workflows into the design process. They facilitate communication between design and technical teams to ensure computational solutions address project goals and constraints. Additionally, they often coordinate with project managers to align computational strategies with project timelines and budgets. Regular meetings, collaborative workshops, and shared digital platforms are common methods used to foster effective teamwork and innovation.

What is the difference between Manager Computational Design Architecture vs Computational Design Architect?

AspectManager Computational Design ArchitectureComputational Design Architect
CredentialsTypically requires a master's degree in architecture or related field, with experience in computational design toolsUsually holds a master's or advanced degree in architecture or computational design, with specialized skills
Work EnvironmentLeads teams in architectural firms, overseeing projects and workflows involving computational methodsFocuses on designing and developing computational solutions, often within architectural or design studios
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly employed in architecture firms, engineering companies, and design consultanciesFound in architectural firms, research institutions, and tech-driven design studios

The main difference is that the Manager Computational Design Architecture oversees teams and project management, while the Computational Design Architect primarily focuses on creating and implementing computational design solutions. Both roles require strong technical skills, but the manager role emphasizes leadership and coordination.

Job description

Your Role

As a Senior Design Manager at Gensler, you will have a successful track record of managing all phases of projects and will have overall responsibility for client satisfaction, quality control and financial performance. You will deploy resources to ensure that the work process flows smoothly and act as the primary liaison between the team and client. This is a great opportunity to join a highly creative, collaborative team where you will leverage your attention to detail and interpersonal skills to design and deliver exceptional projects on time and within budget. Grow your project management expertise while working on trendsetting design projects across a variety of practice areas and industries.

What You Will Do
  • General: Work closely with other Design Managers, Finance, Human Resources and Office Directors. Demonstrate dignity, respect, and professional attitude. Build and improve external firm image by active participation in appropriate organizations (AIA, RDI, NCIDQ, etc.) and maintain contact with current and potential clients. Participate in office meetingsโ€”collaborate with Studio Directors, Office Management and staff. Develop a strategy for Best Practice integration, client satisfaction, and cross-studio integration. Focus on global relationship building, recruiting and service integration. Be an advocate for Gensler sustainability commitments internally and externally. Make sustainability an integral part of every project. Define project sustainability targets in collaboration with the client and the project team at the start of each project. Understand clients ESG goals and work with project teams towards achieving them. Support and encourage team members to pursue sustainability learning.
  • Leadership: Provide leadership to the team and client by communicating project objectives, contract scope, terms, and schedule. Enable the project teams to reach their individual potential and maintain a positive team environment. Collaborate with your team with an "open door policy". Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Projects: Responsible for both managing projects and client satisfaction by focusing on the project process, service/delivery, work environment, project documentation, and building clientsโ€™ trust and loyalty in Gensler. Manage scheduling, budgets, staffing, and project setโ€‘up with clients, sub-contractors, vendors and contractors.
  • Financial: Monitor budgets and profitability targets for your projects. Oversee billing and fee management to ensure all financial activities are consistent with Gensler policies and procedures. Responsible for accounts receivable, discretionary expenses, expense report approvals and productivity projections.
  • Client Engagement: Implement one or more client projects through the leadership of project teams. Grow business for base building and interiors projects within various Practice Areas. Prepare project proposals and negotiate contracts and fees.
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Architecture, Interior Design or related field.
  • 15+ years of related project management experience on a range of design projects, including hospitality.
  • Professional license or certification preferred.
  • Experience negotiating project scope, fees, managing project financial performance, and ensuring fiscal responsibility for projects.
  • Experience with the full project lifecycle through postโ€‘occupancy.
  • Knowledge of building codes, standards and building structures.
  • Basic technical understanding of architectural design, interior and furniture design.
  • Experience with project management software, such as MS Project, a plus.
  • Knowledge in sustainable design principles required.
  • Understand key principles for leading and achieving net zero projects.
  • Previous experience in sustainable design projects preferred; at least one project of the candidate portfolio should showcase this focus, especially built projects with LEED, Living Building Challenge, WELL Building Standard, Fitwel, and/or Net Zero Building certification.
Design Technology at Gensler
  • Design Authoring: Revit, Rhino, Autocad, Navisworks
  • Collaboration: BIM360
  • Computational Design: Grasshopper, Dynamo
  • Building Performance Simulation: Insight, Sefaira, Diva, Ladybug tools
