Our Woodgrain facility in Independence, VA is a sawmill operation providing materials to our manufacturing facilities as well as to various external customers. Woodgrain Inc. is headquartered in Fruitland, Idaho with six divisions and over 45 manufacturing and warehouse facilities in the United States and South America. Since 1954, Woodgrain is proud to be family owned and operated.
Job Summary:
The Boiler Attendant maintains pressure set points and chemicals to keep the boiler steam at the correct level for drying lumber properly. The position reports directly to our Dry Kiln Manager. Position experience is called upon for the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the boiler. All Woodgrain employees will be expected to exemplify our core values and put Safety Above All.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and adjust dust feed and air flow settings
  • Maintain boiler log hourly
  • Monitor and adjust chemical levels
  • Empty ash barrels and trashcans using forklift
  • Clean the hog area
  • Dumps silo sawdust and switch trailers out
  • Shovel sawdust under silo to keep the area clean
  • Assists with monitoring kiln temperatures
  • Perform security checks around the mill when not attending to boiler
  • Other duties assigned by management

Requirements:
  • High School diploma/GED
  • Prior experience in boiler operation (2 years) prefered
  • Forklift and wheelloader experience preferred
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to work well with others in a close environment
  • Must have basic math skills

The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds and is regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and extreme hot and cold temperatures.
