Senior Manager, Audio Visual, SNFL
Department: Branch Libraries

Description
OverviewThe Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library/SNFL is the largest circulating library in the NYPL system. This library is a vital hub for library patrons in and around the City of New York and serves as a bridge between our neighborhood libraries and in-depth research library collections.
Reporting to the Assistant Director, this position is responsible for managing audio/visual production and technological needs for a range of events and services in SNFL, including flagship evening programmatic activities. This position will coordinate with programming staff and internal departments to determine audiovisual and technological requirements, assist to ensure staffing and equipment needs are met, manage/perform the setup and operation of technology for any event, and perform staff and public technology training and assistance.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:
  • A reasonably attainable set of standards in the areas of audio, lighting, and video technology
  • Determine audiovisual requirements, to ensure staffing and equipment needs are met
  • Onsite setup and operation of audio visual equipment in coordination with AV Vendors. AV technologies remotely for virtual programming
  • Inform and consult on audiovisual needs throughout the Manhattan, Staten Island, and Bronx library branches
  • AV-related service and maintenance contracts
  • Room reservation and related support at SNFL

Teach:
  • Other teams and departments about AV production and best practices

Learn:
  • To understand Project Management best practices and tools
  • To keep up to date with advances in the field
  • The core roles and responsibilities that the AV team contributes to the operation of the Public Programs team and NYPL as an institution

Improve:
  • Best practices around AV production and protocols to lower expenses and utilize resources
  • All aspects of the event experience at NYPL for audience and participants
  • Programmatic experience through lighting and other resources
  • Information/data gathering and sharing

Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month, this person will:
  • Learn Stage and Room Management responsibilities
  • Help create AV protocol documentation for part-time technicians
  • Plan for ongoing support and expansion of programmatic activities at SNFL

3 months, this person will:
  • Help ensure part-time technicians learn and understand library policies, institutional and team goals
  • Work to create more efficient workflows for the various event rooms and more effectively communicate with our cross-functional team colleagues

6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Implement Stage Management responsibilities
  • Implement new managerial responsibilities with part-time technicians by participating in conducting regular feedback sessions, professional development, and resolving conflict
  • Tackle complex issues with innovation and creative problem solving for stakeholder alignment

Responsibilities
  • Manage AV equipment inventory, contracts, and scheduled maintenance
  • Support branch and program staff. Answers SNFL-related tickets from staff who need A/V assistance or advice
  • Train, manage, and schedule a team of full-and part-time AV technicians
  • Train, manage, and schedule a team of hourly computer technology aides
  • Coordinate with colleagues on live event production logistics
  • Organize, schedule, and track accessibility services for programs. Works with captioners, ASL interpreters, and other forms of accessibility
  • Make decisions related to production needs in coordination with the Facilities Department and Security teams
  • Engage with cross-functional teams and Senior Leadership
  • Participate in the hiring process related to new AV and technology roles. Includes interviewing and decision making for procurement of new team members
  • Manage SNFL room reservations
  • Provide expert AV consultation to branch staff across NYPL
  • Production manager administrative responsibilities include planning, executing, and distributing work orders and production schedules and other event day specific production documentation
  • Participate in information-gathering and decision-making around AV (in particular video) considering industry best practices while operating in an environment of limited resources and possibly conflicting needs and goals
  • Perform other related duties as necessary

Required Experience
  • 3-5 years management/supervisory experience
  • 7-10 years working professionally in audio visual settings and event productions in a fast paced environment, with meticulous attention to detail and superior organizational skills
  • Experience with directing, and setting up video and audio for live stream broadcasting/recording of live events and meetings, both in person and remotely
  • Experience with audio and video editing software, primarily Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Experience with focusing professional lighting fixtures for stage lighting

Required Skills
  • Audio engineering for live events at front of house, Including operating and configuring wireless mics, wiring sound systems and stages for: discussions, panels, speeches, meetings, readings, film/video screenings and presentations, music and live performance
  • Proficient with software such as PowerPoint, Keynote, Zoom, Google Meets, YouTube, OBS, and similar presentation and meeting applications
  • Knowledge of industry standard AV equipment, software, and tools
  • Listens and communicates well, seeks mutual understanding, and welcomes the sharing of information fully
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google Suite
  • Manage multiple demands, shifting priorities and rapid change. Adapts strategies and tactics to fit fluid circumstances
