Senior Manager, Service Contractor Safety
What you will do
Let's do this. Let's change the world. In this vital role you will under minimal direction, the Senior Manager, Service Contractor Safety provide strategic and operational leadership for the development, implementation, governance, and continuous improvement of the Service Contractor Safety Program. The role works with partner contractors to establish EHS standards, systems, training, assurance processes, and performance expectations for contracted services. This position serves as a senior technical advisor and business partner to site operations, facilities, engineering, procurement, EHS, business owners, and external service providers to identify and control risk, and improve safety performance across multiple sites, service categories, or business areas.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Strategy, Governance, and Leadership
Lead the development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of service contractor safety program elements, systems, standards, governance processes, and training.
Establish clear program expectations, roles, decision rights, escalation pathways, and accountability for service owners, contractor leaders, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
Partner with sites and partners to integrate contractor safety requirements into sourcing, contracting, onboarding, service planning, work execution, and performance management.
Provide technical guidance and influence business decisions involving contractor risk, service delivery, resource allocation, and corrective-action priorities.
Develop and oversee governance processes for contractor safety performance, including leadership reviews, scorecards, metrics, trends, and action tracking.
Use safety data, observations, audit findings, incident trends, and contractor performance information to identify systemic risks and direct program improvements.
Sponsor the use of appropriate technology, data analytics, and digital tools to improve the efficiency, consistency, and effectiveness of service contractor safety management.
Contractor Performance Oversight
Provide safety oversight for contracted services such as maintenance, facilities, utilities, calibration, janitorial, security, landscaping, waste management, pest control, food services, logistics, and other site support activities.
Establish expectations for contractor service-specific safety plans, procedures, scopes of work, and risk controls, and ensure suitable review and approval processes are in place before work begins.
Ensure contractor and subcontractor orientation, site access training, and task-specific safety training programs are effective, current, and consistently implemented.
Lead periodic contractor performance reviews and engage contractor senior leadership when significant, recurring, or systemic safety issues are identified.
Risk Management, Assurance, and Compliance
Ensure effective systems and resources are in place for the timely review of task risk assessments, job hazard analyses, safe work plans, permits, and other required safety documentation for contracted services.
Oversee contractor safety inspections, observations, audits, and assurance activities, and ensure non-conformances are documented, communicated, escalated, tracked, and resolved.
Compile, analyze, and communicate contractor safety statistics, trends, and performance insights to site, functional, and senior management.
Ensure high-risk contracted work is governed by effective permit-to-work and control-of-work processes, including lockout/tagout, electrical safety, hot work, confined space, work at height, line breaking, and other applicable programs.
Incident Management
Provide leadership for incidents and near-miss investigations involving service contractors, as necessary, and ensure root causes, corrective actions, and lessons learned are effectively communicated and applied.
Escalate Incidents based on the incident management SOP.

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree and 2 years of Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related EHS discipline experience
OR
Master's degree and 6 years of Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related EHS discipline experience
OR
Bachelor's degree and 8 years of Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related EHS discipline experience
OR
Associate's degree and 10 years of Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related EHS discipline experience
OR
High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related EHS discipline experience
In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have a minimum of 2 years experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation or resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 8 or more years of EHS experience supporting contractor operations, facilities, manufacturing, maintenance, or other service environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading contractor safety programs, governance processes, or performance-improvement initiatives across multiple sites, service categories, or complex business areas.
  • Advanced knowledge and application of safety regulations and general industry safety standards, principles, and techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex contractor work, identify systemic hazards, and develop practical, compliant, and sustainable risk-control solutions.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal direction, establish priorities, and lead cross-functional initiatives through influence.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25%, including regional, domestic, or international travel based on role location and business needs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
  • Professional safety certification such as CSP, CIH, CMIOSH, or equivalent.
  • Experience leading service contractor safety in the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, manufacturing, or another regulated industry.
  • Experience leading contractor safety programs across multiple sites, regions, service categories, or major outsourced-service portfolios.
  • Experience applying technology, metrics, and data analytics to improve contractor safety performance and program effectiveness.
  • Experience influencing senior leaders and contractor executives and coaching technical or operational teams.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
