SUMMARY

The Chemical Engineer develops and designs equipment for manufacturing chemical and related products utilizing principles and technology of chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, and related physical and natural sciences utilizing computer technology to optimize all phases of research and production.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Designs equipment to control movement, storage, and packaging of solids, liquids, and gases.
  2. Designs and plans measurement and control systems for chemical plants based on data collected in laboratory experiments and pilot plant operations.
  3. Determines most effective arrangement of unit operations such as mixing, grinding, crushing, heat transfer, size reduction, hydrogenation, distillation, purification, oxidation, polymerization, evaporation, and fermentation, exercising judgment to compromise between process requirements, economic evaluation, operator effectiveness, and physical and health hazards.
  4. Performs tests and takes measurements throughout stages of production to determine degree of control over variables, such as temperature, density, specific gravity, and pressure.
  5. Indirectly oversees activities related to operation and control of equipment such as condensers, absorption and evaporation towers, kilns, pumps, stills, valves, tanks, boilers, compressors, grinders, pipelines, electro-magnets, and centrifuges to effect required chemical or physical change.
  6. May conduct research to develop new and improved chemical manufacturing processes.
  7. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Management.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have any direct supervisory responsibility. This position may remotely supervise projects and key personnel.

 QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, material science or chemistry from a four-year college or technical school; or a degree and one year related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMPUTER SKILLSMust be proficient with MS Office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. In addition, must have working knowledge of Adobe PDF documents and CAD software package. LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to clearly communicate technical related subject matters both written and oral. Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics to management. MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems. REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graph, etc.) in the most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Ability to review technical requirements from multiple sources and synthesize into reports, specifications, procedures, etc.
