Maintenance Reliability Planner information

What does a maintenance reliability planner do?

A Maintenance Reliability Planner is responsible for developing and organizing maintenance plans to improve the reliability and efficiency of equipment and machinery. They analyze equipment performance data, schedule preventive maintenance, and coordinate with maintenance teams to minimize downtime and unplanned outages. Their role ensures that maintenance activities are carried out effectively, ultimately reducing costs and improving productivity for the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a maintenance reliability planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Maintenance Reliability Planner, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical maintenance, experience in reliability-centered maintenance, and typically an associate's or bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), predictive maintenance tools, and certifications such as CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional) are commonly required. Excellent analytical thinking, organization, and communication skills help you prioritize tasks, coordinate teams, and optimize maintenance schedules. These skills and qualifications are crucial to minimizing equipment downtime, improving plant reliability, and maximizing operational efficiency.

How does a maintenance reliability planner typically collaborate with other departments to improve equipment uptime?

A Maintenance Reliability Planner works closely with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to coordinate scheduled maintenance and ensure minimal disruption to production. They review equipment histories, analyze failure patterns, and communicate with operators to prioritize work orders and preventive tasks. By fostering cross-functional communication, they help identify root causes of equipment issues and implement solutions that enhance reliability, safety, and efficiency across the facility.

What is the difference between Maintenance Reliability Planner vs Maintenance Technician?

AspectMaintenance Reliability PlannerMaintenance Technician
CredentialsCertifications in reliability, planning, or maintenance management; technical knowledgeTechnical certifications, trade licenses, hands-on skills
Work EnvironmentOffice-based planning, scheduling, and coordinationFieldwork, equipment repair, troubleshooting
Employer & IndustryManufacturing, energy, facilities managementIndustrial plants, facilities, manufacturing

The Maintenance Reliability Planner focuses on developing maintenance strategies, scheduling, and ensuring equipment reliability through planning. In contrast, the Maintenance Technician performs hands-on repairs and maintenance tasks. Both roles are essential in maintaining equipment uptime but differ in their primary responsibilities and work environment.

Do you need a degree to be a maintenance reliability planner?

A maintenance reliability planner typically does not require a formal degree but benefits from technical training, certifications, and experience in maintenance, reliability engineering, or related fields. Strong knowledge of maintenance management systems, troubleshooting, and planning skills are essential for the role.

How much do maintenance reliability planners make in the US?

Maintenance reliability planners in the US typically earn between $70,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. Salaries can increase with certifications such as RCM or CBM and proficiency in maintenance management software like SAP or Maximo.

Is a maintenance reliability planner a good job?

A maintenance reliability planner is a valuable role focused on optimizing maintenance strategies to improve equipment uptime and reduce costs. It typically requires skills in data analysis, maintenance management systems, and understanding of reliability principles. The job offers opportunities for career advancement in industrial, manufacturing, or energy sectors.

Job Purpose

Build and lead a company-wide maintenance reliability organization that enables consistent, high-performing asset management across all manufacturing sites. Act as a strategic partner to Operations, Supply Chain, and Capital Planning, ensuring reliability efforts translate into sustained productivity, lower maintenance and capital spend, and improved operational resilience across the network.

Essential Functions

  • Stand up and lead a new enterprise Maintenance Reliability organization, defining its mission, structure, governance, and operating cadence
  • Establish and deploy a standardized reliability operating model that supports Maintenance Managers with consistent tools, processes, and expectations across all sites
  • Develop and govern enterprise asset strategies for critical and common equipment, including preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance standards
  • Define and implement enterprise rebuild and life cycle strategies for high-value assets to optimize total cost of ownership, reduce unplanned downtime, and defer capital replacement
  • Partner with site Maintenance Managers to improve maintenance planning, scheduling, and execution discipline, including work management, shutdown planning, and backlog control
  • Own enterprise CMMS strategy and standards, ensuring data integrity, consistent asset hierarchies, and effective use of maintenance data to drive decisions
  • Lead the development and deployment of maintenance and reliability KPIs (e.g., uptime, OEE losses, PM compliance, maintenance cost, rebuild effectiveness) and use them to prioritize improvement efforts
  • Provide reliability leadership and technical oversight for capital projects, equipment rebuilds, and major overhauls, ensuring effective early management and rapid stabilization
  • Build enterprise capability through training, coaching, and mentoring of Maintenance Managers, planners, and reliability resources
  • Serve as the enterprise subject matter leader for precision maintenance, root cause failure analysis, and reliability-centered maintenance practice
  • Partner with Operations, Finance, and Supply Chain to ensure reliability initiatives deliver measurable cost reduction, improved throughput, and capital efficiency
  • Ensure all maintenance reliability practices support food safety, quality, environmental, and workplace safety requirements
  • Stay current on emerging reliability technologies, predictive maintenance methods, and asset management best practices, selectively integrating those that deliver business value
  • Support food safety program, quality standards, and legality of manufactured products
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Competencies)

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent experience considered
  • Minimum 10+ years of progressive experience in maintenance, reliability, or engineering leadership within manufacturing environments
  • Demonstrated success leading multi-site reliability programs or enterprise asset management initiatives
  • Experience in food manufacturing or regulated manufacturing environments preferred
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing performance metrics and maintenance cost drivers
  • Deep expertise in maintenance and reliability methodologies, including RCM, TPM, precision maintenance, root cause analysis, and predictive maintenance
  • Strong working knowledge of CMMS systems, asset hierarchies, maintenance planning and scheduling, and spare parts strategies
  • Proven ability to develop and execute equipment rebuild and life cycle strategies at scale
  • Proven ability to build organizations and systems from the ground up
  • Strong enterprise-level influence skills with the ability to lead through matrixed relationships rather than direct authority
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and a bias for action and results
  • Effective communicator capable of engaging frontline maintenance teams, plant leadership, and executive stakeholders
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving manufacturing environment with competing priorities
