The Director of Strategic Maintenance Planning will lead a team focused on the planning of all mandatory, routine, reliability, and project work on American Airlines aircraft throughout the system in the Base Maintenance environment.  This role requires vision, accountability, and the ability to deliver results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. 

What you'll do

As noted above, this list is intended to reflect the current job but there may be additional essential functions (and certainly non-essential job functions) that are not referenced.  Management will modify the job or require other tasks be performed whenever it is deemed appropriate to do so, observing, of course, any legal obligations including any collective bargaining obligations.

  • Leads the planning of base maintenance and aircraft modification workload requirements for the entire fleet to ensure optimization of available manpower and resources and to maximize aircraft available for revenue service
  • Validates that AA remains in compliance with all mandatory company and FAA requirements to ensure the safe operation of the fleet
  • Ensures time-tracked items are scheduled to prevent unnecessary grounding of aircraft; ensures all reliability and project-driven aircraft work is scheduled and completed within the prescribed timeframes, thus increasing reliability
  • Facilitates effective communication between Planning and its principal customers and vendors (e.g., Flight Ops, Supply Chain, Maintenance Control, Line Planning, Base Maintenance, etc.)
  • Interfaces with Finance on budget including both current and long-range forecasts
  • Works closely with Network Planning and Operations Performance and Planning to ensure alignment with corporate aircraft availability targets
  • Oversees development and execution of recovery programs and plans that ensure all critical maintenance tasks are assigned and properly provisioned, in order to recover quickly from off-schedule operations
  • Serves as a critical link between Engineering and Maintenance to ensure all aircraft are in compliance with AA and FAA mandated maintenance requirements and recommended reliability enhancements
  • Manages a diverse workforce of managers, supervisors, and planners

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Planning, Aeronautics, related field, or equivalent experience
  • 7 years of leadership experience managing cross-departmental teams, at or above the manager level
  • 10 years of overall experience with progressive responsibility in operations, planning, scheduling, or equivalent role
  • In-depth knowledge of the airline industry and technical operations, American Airlines (AA) business strategy, company policies and procedures, and collective bargaining agreements

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • 7 years of leadership experience in an area related to base maintenance/tech ops planning
  • 10 years of overall experience in technical operations, preferably within the airline industry
