Position Summary

The Phlebotomy Apprentice works in conjunction with Spartanburg Community College and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System to obtain education and training to become a skilled phlebotomist. This paid apprenticeship will incorporate classroom didactic coursework and on-the-job training in one of the SRHS laboratories. At the end of this course, students will be eligible to sit for the ASCP PBT exam.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Successfully completes the Spartanburg Phlebotomy Academy training, including hospital orientation
  • BLS training course provided by SRHS
  • One-on-one orientation with a Phlebotomy Instructor for skills assessment and validation 
  • Trainees will orient on AM, PM or weekend shifts
  • Completion of the Phlebotomy Course and final exam
  • Take and successfully pass the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Phlebotomy Technician registry
  • Identifies areas for improvement and seeks ways to work on self-defined weaknesses
  • Remains committed to unit, department, and division goals
  • Attends continuing education classes for improvement offered at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System as assigned by leadership
  • Adheres to proper chain of command.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patient information as required by HIPAA
