This role is in the Mainframe DevOps value stream, as a software engineer for one of our flagship products, Gen (formerly known as COOL:Gen or CA Gen). Gen is a low-code, model-driven development environment for enterprise applications. The Opportunity
As a Mainframe Software Engineer (ICB 5), you will take ownership of the development, core architecture, and ongoing evolution of Gen (formerly known as COOL: Gen or CA Gen). This is a high-impact, visible role where you will apply your advanced mainframe expertise to influence all levels of product delivery. You will guide architectural design, spearhead secure coding standards, and act as a technical mentor to other engineers. This is a hands-on technical role: you will write code, lead code reviews, and influence testing strategy. Concurrently, you will serve as a subject matter expert and thought leader in partnership with product management and customers.

What You'll Do
  • Research, develop, and implement high-quality, secure software solutions to maintain and enhance Gen's core product capabilities.
  • Troubleshoot and fix customer cases that have been escalated to engineering.
  • Drive technical design to ensure robust security standards, while retaining a simple user experience.
  • Champion engineering excellence across the Mainframe Software Division, particularly for the DevOps value stream.
  • Act as a public-facing subject matter expert by authoring technical blogs, webinars, and documentation on best practices.
  • Offer thought leadership directly to enterprise customers, helping them navigate complex business requirements and advising them on Gen modernization strategies.

What You Need
  • 12+ years of experience in software development.
  • Bachelors and/or Masters in Computer Science or equivalent degree.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand complex component relationships.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and mentor software engineers.
  • Growth mindset with a commitment to continuous personal and professional development.
  • Deep expertise and hands-on coding experience in COBOL, IBM Assembler
  • Experience working with middleware, such as ECI, TCP/IP or IBM MQ.
  • Experience with zOS systems components and sub-systems such as: z/OS Language Environment (LE), ISPF, CICS, IMS, WebSphere Liberty, and DB2.
  • Strong command of interlanguage communications (ILC) across hybrid environments.
  • Expertise in deep-dive debugging, including reading system dumps, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools(like IPCS), and executing performance tuning.
  • Experience with SMP/E or z/OSMF.

Additional skills that will benefit your efforts
  • Hands-on coding experience in: C, C++, Java, PL/I.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing cybersecurity principles (e.g., cryptography, secure coding practices, access controls) and using industry-standard products like RACF, ACF2, Top Secret, and TLS.
  • Experience in object-oriented programming (OOP) principles and Component Based Development (CBD) .
  • Understanding of complex microservices, APIs, databases, and Client-Server communication.
  • Experience with Source Code Management tools, such as Endevor and GitHub.
  • Knowledge and related product expertise in any of the following: Python, Typescript, Docker, Kubernetes, Spring Boot, Jakarta, Oracle, Db2, MS SQL Server, ODBC, JDBC, ADO.NET, COM, Windows MFC, Jenkins, Ansible
  • Experience with distributed environments (Windows, Unix, Linux).
  • Experience developing with or maintaining Gen (formerly known as COOL:Gen or CA Gen).

Compensation and Benefits
The annual base salary range for this position is USD 129,400.00 To USD 207,000.00

All subject to relevant plan documents and award agreements.
