In a suburban or urban setting, a mailman delivers mail via a truck or by foot, depending on the size of their route. Some mail carriers also help clerks or sorters to sort mail before delivery.

Familiarity with mail sorting equipment, handheld scanners, and route optimization systems is typically required. Reliability, time management, and customer service skills help ensure timely and accurate deliveries while maintaining positive public interactions. These abilities are crucial for efficient mail distribution, customer satisfaction, and maintaining the reputation of the postal service.
