Machinist Internship information

What is a machinist internship?

A Machinist Internship is an entry-level role designed for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in machining and manufacturing. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced machinists, learning to operate machines such as lathes, mills, and grinders. They may assist with reading blueprints, setting up equipment, and performing quality checks on manufactured parts. This internship provides valuable practical skills and industry knowledge, helping interns prepare for a career as a machinist or in related fields.

What kind of projects or tasks will I typically work on during a machinist internship?

As a Machinist Intern, you’ll usually assist with the setup, operation, and maintenance of manual and CNC machines, support in measuring and inspecting parts for quality, and help interpret engineering drawings. You may work closely with experienced machinists to learn tooling techniques, machine programming, and troubleshooting processes. Participating in team meetings, maintaining a clean workspace, and adhering to safety standards are also common responsibilities. These tasks provide hands-on experience and valuable exposure to shop floor best practices and real production environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the machinist internship position, and why are they important?

A Machinist Internship requires basic mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and foundational knowledge of blueprint reading or machine operation, often supported by technical coursework or vocational training. Familiarity with manual and CNC machining equipment, measurement tools like calipers and micrometers, and safety protocols is highly advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, a willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns excel in this hands-on environment. These competencies ensure safe, accurate production work and smooth collaboration with experienced machinists and engineers.

We're looking for creative, driven, and tenacious students ready to take on the monumental challenge of fusion energy alongside our engineering team.

Core Responsibilities

  • Support the design, build, and testing of TITAN and related pulsed-power hardware alongside the engineering team.

  • Move fast. Make decisions, learn quickly, and keep moving forward.

  • Think bigger. Simplify relentlessly. Don't default to the safe answer.

  • Disagree and commit. The best idea wins. Once a decision is made, we move.
