What is a machinist inspector?

A Machinist Inspector is a skilled professional responsible for examining and measuring machined parts to ensure they meet precise engineering specifications and quality standards. They use specialized tools and instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances. Machinist Inspectors play a critical role in manufacturing by ensuring products are accurate and free from defects before they move to the next stage of production or shipment. Their work helps maintain quality control and compliance with industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machinist inspector?

To excel as a Machinist Inspector, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience with quality control procedures, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and industry standards like ISO 9001 is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying defects and coordinating with production teams. These capabilities ensure components meet strict specifications, uphold safety standards, and maintain efficient manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges faced by machinist inspectors during quality control processes?

Machinist Inspectors often face the challenge of maintaining precision and consistency across large production runs, especially when working with tight tolerances. They must remain vigilant for subtle defects or measurement deviations and be prepared to troubleshoot root causes, which requires a thorough understanding of both machinery and quality standards. Additionally, balancing time constraints with the need for meticulous inspections can be demanding, and effective communication with machinists and engineers is essential to address and resolve any quality issues promptly.

About the Opportunity

As a Mill Machinist, you'll set up, operate, and adjust multi-axis CNC mill machines to produce complex, high-precision components that meet exacting quality requirements. You'll play an important role in delivering reliable parts that support critical aerospace and defense programs.

At Warnke Precision Machining, quality and craftsmanship are central to everything we do. As an AS9100D-registered high-precision machine shop, we manufacture and assemble complex components for aerospace and defense prime contractors supporting federal government and military programs. Our in-house capabilities range from advanced 5-axis machining to traditional manual equipment, allowing our experienced team to consistently produce reliable, high-quality components.

What You’ll Do

  • Operate and set up multi-axis CNC mill machines within specified tolerances by following work instructions, machine programs, and engineering drawings.
  • Make program adjustments using G-code, Mastercam, CAMWorks, and/or GibbsCAM.
  • Observe machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunctions and adjust machines as necessary.
  • Thoroughly inspect first-piece runs and modify machine speeds, feeds, and tooling to ensure the precision and accuracy of manufactured parts.
  • Inspect finished products for accuracy and uniformity.
  • Complete operation-specific quality control documents as needed.
  • Assist with training other operators and move to other machines as production needs require.
  • Perform necessary side operations during machine cycle time.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.

  • A willingness to support teammates and share knowledge with other operators.
  • The flexibility to move between machines and respond to changing production needs.
  • A consistent focus on safety, integrity, and reliable performance.
Requirements:
  • 3–5 years of CNC mill setup and programming experience.
  • Experience using measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, and dial depth indicators to set up equipment and measure machined parts.
  • Ability to understand and adjust G-code programs.
  • Ability to read and follow engineering drawings, work instructions, and machine programs.
  • Ability to operate multiple CNC machines.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience with Mastercam, CAMWorks, and/or GibbsCAM.
  • Experience with Fanuc and Fadal controllers is a plus.
