Job description

Spyderco, Inc., a conservative, established and growing manufacturing company committed to superior sporting, tactical and culinary knives and accessories, is looking for a supervisor to join our Manufacturing team in the Machining department. This position is chiefly responsible for the operations and supervision of the Machining department within Spyderco's US manufacturing facility. The supervisor will oversee day-to-day operations including the production of blades and other components, maintain the functionality of machines and safe working conditions, ongoing management of staff within the department, and collaborate with other departments to ensure departmental and company goals are met. Additionally, the supervisor role will push and ensure the efficient operation of the Machining department by supervising, monitoring output, and coordinating the training of employees.
Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am-4:00pm
Compensation: $43.00 - $55.00/hr. (Experience, skills, and knowledge will be taken into consideration and adjusted accordingly)
Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and manage department staff, including training management, intrapersonal interactions, and ongoing performance review.
  • Develop and oversee usage of new processes and procedures withing department for ongoing and new operations, including job instruction sheets and workflows.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and address issues with products and machines.
  • Perform random quality checks on products and offer constructive feedback.
  • Create and implement product programs for machine operation.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and aid in design for all production fixtures and subsequent programs for machining centers.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance department to ensure product runs without issue and remains within specification.
  • Collaborate with Engineering department on achievable tolerances, designs, and machining by utilizing CAD design and Mastercam.
  • Analyze tooling needs and collaborate with vendors to determine optimal selection.
  • Ensure proper tools and supplies are available and order required items as needed.
  • Track and maintain individual product counts and work order throughput.
  • Communicate effectively with Manufacturing Managers as well as other department leads and management to ensure companywide goals are met.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Familiarization of Spyderco products, designs, steels, and materials.
  • Delegate tasks and jobs to ensure department goals are met.
  • Conduct Machining department meetings to address any issues or concerns.
  • Ensure and maintain a clean, safe work environment according to 5S standards.
  • Attend and participate in meetings when necessary.
  • Ensure proper packaging and shipping to and from manufacturing plants of outsourced products.
  • Collaborate with Factory Management on expansion of Machining department, for machine reviews and various testing for new equipment or processes.

Job Requirements:
  • High School Diploma- Required
  • Associate's degree - Manufacturing - Preferred (Other relevant school or experience will be considered)
  • 5+ years of machine shop experience is required.
  • 3+ years of past leadership experience is required.
  • 3+ years of Mastercam experience is required.
  • Must possess strong knowledge of machining concepts and CNC machine operation.
  • Possesses robust background in developing and modifying machine programs utilizing Mastercam, CAD design, and adjusting G-code.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T practices and measuring techniques, measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauge pins, etc.), drafting software, and reading part prints.
  • Ability to establish, create, and modify tooling for machine centers.
  • Ability to adapt, embrace new methods, give and receive objective criticism.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient arithmetic and geometric understanding.
  • Proficient organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knife knowledge is a plus.
