What does a machine vision software engineer do?

A Machine Vision Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software systems that enable computers to interpret and process visual information from the real world. They work with cameras, sensors, and advanced algorithms to automate tasks such as inspection, identification, measurement, and guidance in industrial and robotics applications. Their responsibilities often include integrating hardware with software, optimizing image processing algorithms, and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of vision systems. These engineers play a crucial role in industries like manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, and logistics where automated visual inspection and analysis are essential.

What are some of the main challenges machine vision software engineers face when integrating vision systems into manufacturing environments?

Machine Vision Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring reliable image capture despite varying lighting conditions and accommodating different types of defects or product variations. Integrating vision systems with existing automation hardware and production lines can require close collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers. Additionally, optimizing algorithms for real-time performance while maintaining high accuracy is a frequent necessity. Continuous testing and iterative development are key to addressing these challenges and delivering robust solutions in dynamic manufacturing settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine vision software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Vision Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, image processing, and mathematics, usually backed by a relevant degree. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or C++, machine vision libraries like OpenCV, and experience with deep learning frameworks are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help engineers design robust solutions and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for developing accurate, efficient vision systems that meet real-world automation and quality control demands.

Pay: $28.00–$32.00/hr
Job Type: Full-Time
Shift: Day Shift
Experience: 1+ Years
Machines: CNC Mills • CNC Lathes • Manual Machines
CAM Software: Mastercam

Why join Azon USA?

Azon USA is an employee-owned, Kalamazoo-based manufacturer that has been developing machinery and polyurethane systems for the commercial building industry since 1977.

This is a hands-on CNC Programmer / Machinist opportunity for someone who wants ownership of the complete machining process. You will program parts in Mastercam, set up and operate CNC mills and lathes, inspect finished components, and help manage the tooling needed to manufacture Azon’s customized equipment.

The work includes varying production runs, regular setups, and part changeovers—not simply loading and unloading the same part all day. You will machine steel, stainless steel, and aluminum while working from blueprints, GD&T, and established quality requirements.

Your work will directly support the machinery Azon designs and manufactures for customers in the global aluminum window, door, curtain wall, and storefront industries.

⚙️ What you’ll be doing

  • Program CNC mills and lathes using Mastercam
  • Set up and operate CNC equipment to produce custom machined components
  • Interpret and edit CNC programs to meet blueprint requirements
  • Work with G-code and M-code programming
  • Complete machine setups and part changeovers across varying production runs
  • Operate and monitor multiple machines when required
  • Select, research, organize, and maintain production tooling
  • Inspect finished parts using micrometers, calipers, and standard measuring equipment
  • Maintain the calibration of personal inspection equipment
  • Operate manual mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, and saws
  • Verify parts against blueprints, GD&T, and dimensional requirements

Preferred

  • Completion of a machinist apprenticeship program
  • CNC Machinist certificate

Why you’ll like working here

This position gives you the opportunity to use a broad range of machining skills. You will be involved in programming, setup, operation, inspection, tooling, and troubleshooting rather than being limited to one part of the process.

You will also contribute to customized equipment manufactured by an established, employee-owned company with customers around the world.
