Machine Vision Application Engineer information

What is a machine vision application engineer?

A Machine Vision Application Engineer is a technical professional who designs, develops, and implements machine vision systems used for automated inspection, measurement, and guidance in manufacturing and industrial environments. They work with cameras, sensors, lighting, and image processing software to create solutions that help machines 'see' and interpret visual information. Their role often involves collaborating with clients to understand application requirements, selecting appropriate hardware and software, and ensuring successful system integration. Machine Vision Application Engineers play a key role in improving product quality, production efficiency, and automation processes.

How does a machine vision application engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Machine Vision Application Engineers frequently work in cross-functional teams, collaborating closely with software developers, mechanical engineers, and production staff to ensure vision systems integrate seamlessly into manufacturing processes. They are often involved from the initial requirements gathering stage through to implementation and troubleshooting, providing technical expertise and translating complex imaging needs into practical solutions. Regular communication with quality assurance and operations teams is also common, as these engineers help fine-tune systems to maintain accuracy and efficiency on the production floor.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine vision application engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Vision Application Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering or computer science, experience with image processing, and a strong understanding of optics and camera technologies. Familiarity with machine vision software (such as Cognex, Halcon, or OpenCV), programming languages (like C++ or Python), and industrial automation systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and project management abilities help you excel in client-facing and cross-disciplinary environments. These skills are crucial for designing, implementing, and supporting robust vision systems that meet manufacturing and automation needs.

What is the difference between Machine Vision Application Engineer vs Computer Vision Engineer?

We are seeking a highly skilled Machine Vision Systems Engineer to play a pivotal role in the design, development, and implementation of advanced machine vision systems.

The Role

As an Automation Engineer, you will be at the front end of the design, development, and deployment of custom machine vision systems within industrial automation projects. You will be responsible for ensuring these systems meet all technical specifications, adhere to industry standards, and satisfy customer requirements. This role requires close collaboration with engineering teams, vendors, and customers to deliver highโ€‘quality, productionโ€‘ready solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Work with customers and sales leadership to define the scope of machine vision projects.
  • Conceptualize, design, and confirm technical specifications and bills of material for automation & machine vision systems.
  • Design and develop electrical and mechanical solutions for automation projects.
  • Program, test, and troubleshoot PLCs (Siemens preferred).
  • Work with industrial robots and cobots (Fanuc, Franka) โ€“ programming and troubleshooting.
  • Provide oversight for equipment assessment, ordering, and verification, ensuring that final hardware and software meet customer needs.
  • Ensure that designs align with Catalyx and industry standards and meet all specified requirements.
  • Oversee and support the development, testing, and installation phases, ensuring systems are productionโ€‘ready and meet design specifications.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for automation design, providing guidance in risk evaluation and technical matters.
  • Be part of our SLA support team, working in a rotating weekly schedule to assist our customers.
  • Meet with vendors to confirm component selection and stay informed on new technologies in machine vision and automation systems.
  • Analyse existing procedures, suggest improvements, and support the creation of design and technical documentation.
  • Occasionally develop and troubleshoot machine vision systems (Cognex).
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial or Computer Engineering from an accredited institution (vision component preferred).
  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours or varying work patterns depending on project needs or service duty.
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally.
Required Skills
  • Proven experience in designing and developing machine automation systems within industrial automation (robot guidance experience is a plus) โ€“ Siemens, Fanuc, Franka.
  • Experience with existing Machine Vision Platforms such as Cognex, Keyence, Halcon, OpenCV or Tensorflow (Cognex platform preferred).
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of electrical and mechanical design (Solidworks, Eโ€‘plan).
  • Experience implementing projects in a regulated/validated environment is desired.
  • Understanding and knowledge of computer vision solutions and principles.
  • Fluent in English, Dutch and/or French. Ideally have a knowledge of German.
