Machine Vision Application Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Vision Application Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Vision Application Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering or computer science, experience with image processing, and a strong understanding of optics and camera technologies. Familiarity with machine vision software (such as Cognex, Halcon, or OpenCV), programming languages (like C++ or Python), and industrial automation systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and project management abilities help you excel in client-facing and cross-disciplinary environments. These skills are crucial for designing, implementing, and supporting robust vision systems that meet manufacturing and automation needs.

How does a Machine Vision Application Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Machine Vision Application Engineers frequently work in cross-functional teams, collaborating closely with software developers, mechanical engineers, and production staff to ensure vision systems integrate seamlessly into manufacturing processes. They are often involved from the initial requirements gathering stage through to implementation and troubleshooting, providing technical expertise and translating complex imaging needs into practical solutions. Regular communication with quality assurance and operations teams is also common, as these engineers help fine-tune systems to maintain accuracy and efficiency on the production floor.

What is a Machine Vision Application Engineer?

A Machine Vision Application Engineer is a technical professional who designs, develops, and implements machine vision systems used for automated inspection, measurement, and guidance in manufacturing and industrial environments. They work with cameras, sensors, lighting, and image processing software to create solutions that help machines 'see' and interpret visual information. Their role often involves collaborating with clients to understand application requirements, selecting appropriate hardware and software, and ensuring successful system integration. Machine Vision Application Engineers play a key role in improving product quality, production efficiency, and automation processes.

What is the difference between Machine Vision Application Engineer vs Computer Vision Engineer?

AspectMachine Vision Application EngineerComputer Vision Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; experience with vision systemsBachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related; strong programming skills
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, automation, quality control settingsResearch labs, tech companies, AI development environments

Job description

Senior Field Application Engineer

We are an innovative, Vancouver-based startup at the forefront of robotics, AI, and machine vision technologies. Backed by VC funding and we've been recognized with the 2025 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Leadership Award, the AAM Supplier Excellence Innovation Award, and the 2024 BC Tech "Company of the Year โ€“ Growth", we are on a mission to redefine the future of AI-driven robotic vision systems. Apera AI helps manufacturers make their factories more flexible and productive. Robots enhanced with Apera's software have 4D Vision โ€“ the ability to see and handle objects with human-like capability. Challenging applications such as bin picking, sorting, packaging, and assembly are now open to fast, precise, and reliable automation. Apera is led by an experienced team from high-growth companies focused on robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing.

Robots can do amazing things - if they can see. That's where you come in.

We're Apera AI. Our breakthrough 4D Visionโ„ข systems turn robots into intelligent, adaptable workers. But that transformation doesn't happen without great teams - especially those leading the onboarding and optimization of our technology on the factory floor.

We're hiring a Senior Field Application Engineer to lead how Apera's AI vision technology is delivered, adopted, and scaled in real manufacturing environments. This is a leadership-first role - not just about solving problems, but about building the people and processes that prevent them.

This role is based out of our office in Farming Hills, Michigan.

What You'll Actually Do:

  • Lead planning, installation, and commissioning of Apera's vision systems at customer sites
  • Develop and coach a high-performing FAE team, setting standards for excellence
  • Oversee customer onboarding and training programs that build operator confidence
  • Collaborate with Engineering/Product to drive product feedback and improvement
  • Track operational KPIs - uptime, adoption, and deployment quality
  • Create tools and documentation that scale field operations reliably
  • Own resolution of complex customer or technical escalations

Why This Is a Career Move:

  • Lead technology that's redefining global automation
  • Accelerate your growth across AI, robotics, and leadership
  • Build high-performing teams from the ground up
  • Influence strategy, product, and process from a key execution point

What We're Looking For:

  • 9โ€“15 years of relevant experience, including leadership of technical and engineering teams
  • Strong understanding of robotics, automation, and troubleshooting
  • Exceptional communicator with executive presence
  • Willing to travel 50โ€“60%, including internationally
  • Previous machine vision experience is a plus

Why Apera?

  • Every employee is an owner - equity for all.
  • A culture of curiosity: we experiment, learn fast, and share openly.
  • Well-funded with a recent Series A to fuel ambitious product roadmaps and growth.
  • Trusted by big-name automotive in TIER 1 suppliers.
  • High-impact work with autonomy and clear paths to grow.

At Apera AI, every employee owns equity, because those who build the future should share in its upside. Join us to make robotics more accessible, predictable, and powerful.
