What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in machine shops, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in machine shops often encounter challenges such as maintaining precision and quality under tight deadlines, adapting to frequent changes in production requirements, and ensuring safety while operating complex machinery. To address these challenges, it's important to stay updated on the latest industry best practices, participate in ongoing training, and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors. Implementing strong safety protocols and regularly maintaining equipment also helps minimize risks and enhances productivity.

What are machine shops?

Machine shops are specialized facilities equipped with tools and machinery for shaping, cutting, and assembling metal or other materials into precise parts or products. They typically use equipment such as lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC machines to manufacture components for industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing. Skilled machinists and technicians work in these shops to create custom parts based on engineering drawings or specifications. Machine shops can handle anything from prototyping to large-scale production runs and often provide repair and maintenance services for industrial machinery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a machine shop, and why are they important?

To thrive in a machine shop, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and a solid understanding of machining processes, often supported by a technical diploma or relevant experience. Familiarity with CNC machines, CAD/CAM software, and the ability to read blueprints are crucial technical requirements. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and a commitment to safety are important soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for producing high-quality parts efficiently and maintaining a safe, productive work environment.

Job description

CNC Machinist

Job Description

This role focuses on independently setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes, primarily Haas equipment, to produce precision components to very tight tolerances. You will run production jobs, monitor machine performance and part quality, and make basic program edits using M and G codes, working with programs generated from Fusion 360 in a busy machine shop environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC machines, including Haas mills and lathes, to produce precision parts.
  • Perform independent machine setups on two center turning lathes and five mills (V2, V4, and V5).
  • Run production jobs from start to finish while closely monitoring machine performance and output quality.
  • Make basic program edits using M and G codes to optimize machining processes and address issues.
  • Work with CNC programs generated from Fusion 360 and ensure correct loading and execution.
  • Maintain tight tolerances of ±0.001” on all relevant parts and processes.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints and part drawings to ensure accurate machining.
  • Perform basic visual quality inspections of finished parts to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Collaborate with other machinists and shop personnel to coordinate workflow and machine usage.
  • Contribute to a clean, organized, and safe machine shop environment by following established procedures.

Essential Skills

  • Experience operating CNC machines, specifically mills or lathes (experience with both is preferred).
  • Ability to perform independent machine setups on CNC equipment.
  • Proficiency making basic edits in M and G code on CNC programs.
  • Ability to maintain and work within tight tolerances of ±0.001”.
  • Experience with Haas CNC equipment, including mills and lathes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Hands-on experience in a machine shop environment.
  • Familiarity with multi-axis machining concepts.
  • Ability to perform basic visual quality inspections to verify part accuracy.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with programs created in Fusion 360.
  • Exposure to Mastercam or similar CAM software.
  • Comfort working with various machine shop tools, fixtures, and setups.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to precision work.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other machinists in a small team setting.

Why Work Here?

You will join a close-knit, approximately 12-person team that values a strong family-oriented culture and recognizes individual contributions. The organization offers merit-based raises tied to performance, health support with a monthly contribution toward medical coverage, and dental and life insurance benefits. You can build tenure with two weeks of paid time off after one year, enjoy eight paid holidays, and benefit from a paid bonus week in December based on company performance, creating a rewarding and supportive environment for long-term growth.

Work Environment

You will work in a small machine shop environment alongside one manual machinist and one full-time CNC machinist, with the potential for up to four machinists in the shop at a time when others return from leave. The shop runs Haas mills and lathes, including two center turning lathes and five mills (V2, V4, and V5), using Fusion 360-generated programs and traditional machine shop tools. The setting is hands-on, collaborative, and focused on precision machining, where you can expect an active production floor and close cooperation with a tight-knit team.
