Job description

John R. Bromiley Company Inc. is an ISO 9001 and AS9100 certified precision manufacturing company that specializes in multi-axis CNC Milling/Turning and multi-axis CNC Swiss Turning. For over 50 years we have offered machining solutions for many industries including Aerospace, Medical, Military, Electric Power, Instrumentation and Hydraulics.

The General Manager serves as the President’s second-in-command and is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations and financial performance of John R. Bromiley Company. This position provides leadership across manufacturing, engineering, production, programming, scheduling, continuous improvement, quality support, and operational financial management.

The General Manager is responsible for translating the President’s strategic and business objectives into measurable operational and financial results. Working closely with the President and the management team, the General Manager will use financial and operational data to improve profitability, productivity, capacity utilization, cost control, and overall business performance.

The successful candidate will bring strong precision manufacturing experience combined with the financial and business acumen necessary to understand how decisions made on the shop floor affect job profitability, gross margin, cash flow, and company performance.


Essential Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership

  • Lead and direct all day-to-day manufacturing operations, including production, scheduling, workflow, engineering support, programming coordination, and shop-floor execution.
  • Translate the President’s strategic vision and business goals into clear operational priorities, measurable objectives, and accountable action plans.
  • Ensure customer delivery commitments are achieved while maintaining required standards for safety, quality, cost, and customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor and improve labor efficiency, machine utilization, setup time, throughput, overtime, scrap, rework, capacity, and overall shop productivity.
  • Identify operational constraints, bottlenecks, and inefficiencies and establish priorities for corrective action and continuous improvement.
  • Champion Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement, disciplined processes, and measurable performance improvement throughout the organization.
  • Support estimating, quoting, job planning, scheduling, and resource allocation through practical manufacturing knowledge and sound business judgment.
  • Ensure compliance with AS9100, ISO, customer, company, safety, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Financial and Business Performance

  • Assume operational responsibility for achieving the company’s revenue, gross margin, operating profit, and profitability objectives.
  • Demonstrate strong working knowledge of the Profit & Loss Statement and understand the operational factors affecting revenue, cost of goods sold, gross margin, operating expenses, and profitability.
  • Partner with the President and Controller in developing annual operating budgets, forecasts, financial targets, and performance expectations.
  • Review financial and operational results regularly and identify the underlying operational causes of significant favorable or unfavorable variances.
  • Establish, monitor, and manage key financial and operational performance indicators (KPIs) to measure company and departmental performance.
  • Analyze estimated versus actual job performance, including labor hours, setup time, machine time, material costs, outside processing, scrap, rework, and other significant cost drivers.
  • Monitor job profitability and work with estimating, engineering, production, and management to address recurring margin erosion or costing discrepancies.
  • Understand and evaluate machine rates, labor rates, overhead allocation, burden, and other factors used to determine the true cost of manufacturing.
  • Monitor labor costs, overtime, staffing levels, and productivity to ensure resources are aligned with production requirements and financial objectives.
  • Evaluate machine utilization and capacity to determine whether equipment and labor resources are being used effectively and profitably.
  • Monitor the financial impact of scrap, rework, downtime, excessive setup time, expedited work, and other operational inefficiencies.
  • Use backlog, bookings, capacity, staffing, and production data to assist in forecasting future revenue and resource requirements.
  • Participate in pricing and estimating reviews to help ensure quotations reflect realistic manufacturing costs, capacity requirements, risk, and appropriate profit expectations.
  • Evaluate proposed capital expenditures, equipment purchases, automation, tooling, and process improvements using return on investment (ROI), payback, capacity, productivity, and profitability considerations.
  • Maintain awareness of inventory and work-in-process levels and their impact on operations, working capital, and cash flow.
  • Work closely with the Controller to ensure management has accurate and timely financial and operational information for decision-making.
  • Develop corrective action plans when financial or operational KPIs fall below expectations and monitor progress until performance improves.

Leadership

  • Provide leadership to the Shop Foreman, Engineering Manager, and other leads.
  • Establish clear expectations, responsibilities, performance standards, and accountability throughout the organization.
  • Foster a professional, collaborative, accountable, and continuous-improvement culture.
  • Promote communication and cooperation among manufacturing, engineering, quality, estimating, purchasing, finance, HR, and other functions.
  • Build an effective leadership partnership with the President while assuming increasing responsibility for the day-to-day management of the organization.
  • Maintain effective communication with customers, suppliers, and other external business partners as appropriate.
  • Keep the President informed of significant operational, financial, customer, staffing, safety, and quality matters while minimizing the need for the President’s involvement in routine operational decisions.

Required Qualifications

  • 5–10+ years of progressive manufacturing leadership experience, preferably with responsibility for an entire operation or significant business unit.
  • 15+ years of experience in precision machining, CNC manufacturing, or a closely related manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing both operational and financial performance in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with P&L responsibility, budgeting, forecasting, cost control, job costing, profitability analysis, and financial KPI management.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect shop-floor performance with financial results and use data to drive management decisions.
  • Strong knowledge of CNC milling and turning, manufacturing processes, tooling, fixturing, GD&T, inspection, production planning, and scheduling.
  • Strong understanding of labor efficiency, machine utilization, capacity planning, setup reduction, scrap/rework, throughput, and manufacturing cost drivers.
  • Experience leading continuous improvement and implementing sustainable process improvements with measurable operational and financial results.
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, AS9100, ISO quality systems, ERP/MRP systems, and modern shop-floor management practices.
  • Experience using ERP/MRP systems to analyze job costing, estimated-versus-actual performance, labor, machine utilization, and other operational data.
  • Experience with JobBOSS², Mastercam, and SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, analytical, financial, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with the owner/President, management team, and employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Business-minded leadership approach with the ability to balance customer requirements, employee development, operational execution, growth, and profitability.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
