Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Quality Control Manager to lead and oversee quality operations in a busy machine shop environment. This is a hands-on management position for someone who enjoys being on the shop floor and working directly with machinists, inspectors, and production personnel.

The QC Manager will be responsible for maintaining and improving our quality systems while also personally performing inspections, reviewing first articles and in-process work, troubleshooting quality issues, and helping ensure parts meet customer specifications.

The ideal candidate has strong inspection experience, understands GD&T and engineering drawings, and can effectively balance quality management responsibilities with hands-on inspection work. Experience working within an ISO 9001 quality system is a strong plus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day quality control activities for the machine shop.
  • Establish and maintain quality standards, procedures, and inspection processes.
  • Monitor overall product quality and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Work closely with the Shop Manager, Production, Engineering, and machinists to resolve quality issues.
  • Investigate nonconforming material and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Track quality metrics, recurring defects, scrap, rework, and customer complaints.
  • Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions as needed.
  • Maintain quality records and inspection documentation.

Hands-On Inspection

  • Spend significant time on the shop floor inspecting parts and supporting production.
  • Perform first-piece/first-article, in-process, and final inspections.
  • Inspect precision-machined components using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, CMMs, optical comparators, and other inspection equipment.
  • Verify dimensions and tolerances against engineering drawings and customer requirements.
  • Interpret GD&T and complex engineering drawings.
  • Assist machinists with dimensional problems and inspection requirements.
  • Determine whether parts meet specifications and make disposition recommendations for nonconforming product.
  • Help establish practical inspection methods and procedures for new and existing jobs.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify sources of quality problems and work with production to prevent recurrence.
  • Help improve inspection processes, work instructions, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis and corrective-action activities.
  • Promote a culture of quality throughout the shop.
  • Train and mentor quality inspectors and production personnel on inspection procedures and quality requirements.

ISO / Quality System

  • Maintain and improve the company's quality management system.
  • Support internal and external audits.
  • Maintain required quality documentation and records.
  • Help ensure compliance with applicable customer and industry requirements.
  • ISO 9001 experience is preferred and will be considered a significant plus.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in quality control/inspection within a machine shop or precision manufacturing environment.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of machining processes and manufacturing practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T.
  • Proficient with precision inspection equipment and measurement techniques, including CMM.
  • Experience with first article, in-process, and final inspection.
  • Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with machinists, engineers, management, and customers.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing quality work.
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment and being actively involved on the shop floor.
  • ISO 9001 experience preferred.
  • Experience with AS9100, IATF, or other quality standards is a plus, depending on our customer requirements.
