What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine operator trainee?

Familiarity with manufacturing equipment, safety protocols, and basic computer systems or programmable logic controllers (PLCs) is often required. These abilities are crucial for ensuring operational efficiency, minimizing downtime, and maintaining workplace safety.

What are some common challenges machine operator trainees face during their initial months on the job?

Machine Operator Trainees often encounter challenges such as learning to operate complex machinery safely, adapting to fast-paced production environments, and mastering quality control procedures. Adjusting to shift work and understanding the importance of teamwork in a manufacturing setting can also take time. However, most employers provide hands-on training and mentorship to support new trainees as they build confidence and proficiency in their roles.

Job description

We're looking for motivated individuals to join a growing metals processing team as a Grinder / Machine Operator Trainee. This position is designed as a hands-on training and development role where all new hires begin in the grinding department. While grinding is a physically demanding position, it serves as the foundation for learning our processes, demonstrating work ethic, and building the skills needed to advance into higher-level machine operator positions.

Candidates with previous machine operating experience are encouraged to apply. However, all team members start in the grinder role to learn the operation, demonstrate reliability, and earn advancement opportunities. Employees who show initiative, strong attendance, and a commitment to safety can quickly move into machine operator responsibilities.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants more than just a job and is looking for a long-term manufacturing career with room to grow.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform metal grinding and finishing operations throughout the shift
  • Grind, polish, and prepare steel and aluminum sheets, plates, and coils
  • Inspect materials for quality and surface finish

Growth & Advancement Opportunities

As you develop and demonstrate proficiency, you'll be trained to:

  • Operate PLC-controlled manufacturing equipment using HMIs and push-button controls
  • Assist with coil processing operations including slitting, polishing, buffing, and cut-to-length processing
  • Set up and monitor production equipment
  • Learn material handling using forklifts and overhead cranes (training provided)
  • Support packaging and shipment preparation of finished products

Additional Responsibilities

  • Read measurements and inspect products using tape measures, calipers, and other measuring tools
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Follow all quality standards and safety procedures
  • Wear required PPE and adhere to company safety guidelines

  • Basic math and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable using or learning computer-controlled equipment
  • Strong attendance and reliability
  • Desire to learn new skills and advance within the company
  • Safety-minded with strong attention to detail

Experienced Machine Operators Encouraged to Apply

Candidates with previous machining, machine operation, metal processing, fabrication, or CNC experience are welcome. This role offers an opportunity to demonstrate your abilities and transition into higher-level machine operation roles as opportunities become available.

  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the shift
