Job description

ZTEX Construction is a heavy civil contractor specializing in earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, underground utilities and overall project management. We are locally owned, and we are currently looking for Heavy Equipment Operators.

The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable, energetic, positive, proactive, willing to learn and grow with the company, and overall be a team player.


Job Purpose and Function

Heavy Equipment Operators, under general supervision, operate various equipment including graders, excavators, backhoes, blades, compactors, scrapers, front end loaders, rollers, pavers, dump trucks, skid steer loaders, etc. all heavy construction equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

This list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.


  • Performs routine inspection and maintenance on vehicles such as checking oil, water, and tires.

  • Operates graders for leveling and operates tractors to load materials such as dirt and rocks.

  • Operates backhoe and front-end loaders as required.

  • Operates forklifts, water trucks, dump trucks to transport trash and materials.

  • Operates various equipment for general site preparation, landscaping, removal, and related assignments.

  • Operates 40-ton trash trucks including hydraulic equipment such as tail gates, hoppers, and packers.

  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • May perform curb markings, striping operations, and/or other pavement markings as required.
  • May be required to assist Labor crews as needed and perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Ability to operate heavy equipment.

  • Knowledge of light and heavy equipment operation and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of basic vehicle inspection and maintenance including tire pressure, checking oil and water levels.

  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
  • Possess physical and mental stamina commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.


Education, Training and Experience

  • High school graduation or other equivalent (i.e., General Educational Development (GED), foreign equivalency, etc.)
  • 2-3 Years Experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator in a construction environment. 


Physical Requirements

This position performs strenuous physical activity, for long periods, under varying and adverse field conditions. This position must be able to lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs., stand, walk on uneven surfaces, manually manipulate, grasp, reach out and above shoulder, climb, kneel, bend, twist, and push/pull. Vision: Frequent near acuity, depth perception, and color vision.


Environmental Conditions:

Work is performed outside in all types of environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.

Additional Qualifying Factors

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical screening. If applicable to the contract, you may also be required to submit through a background check. Must have reliable transportation to/from work, must have a valid driver's license at time of application.
